would love some critique on this one... this is from last week... my boy modelling for me at the hockey arena... he can be pretty cooperative when he wants to be, but i can never figure out how best to pose him...
tx for the views, comments and favs over the last few days... :)
Not sure what to critique...liked the lines of the railings leading my eye down to the portrait; liked the lighting on the stairs. Maybe highlighting his face more than his jacket? But to me the shot works well as is.
Nice location, good light, and the processing is spot on. I like how the handrail leads to him. For me, the composition is a little awkward, somewhat disjointed. I would rotate it to the right, so that the corner of the walls is straight, then crop some of the left of so that the handrail starts in the top left hand corner. Just downloaded a copy of this and tried it, much easier on the eye for me.
As for the pose, hands in pockets, shoulders hunched and looking down. Foot kicking / scraping the floor would say more bored to me, or maybe kicking around an old drinks can.
I think you have always got to put a thought into ant people standing in front of you! Lookk bored is good here! Look surprised, wondering, etc. Its an emotive setting - bring him back when he is 21!
Oh yes! What a fab model! Like it very much, love the corner of the stairs and the angles and lines created, although I wish the corner was more vertical, love the light and edit, did you think of one with him looking up at you with a good stare? terrific work!
That's excellent! Really tells a story. Not necessarily a very happy one, but anyway. I'm thinking it might be an interesting addition, if he was fiddling a phone so that the lit screen would show. You know, the modern version of a kid being lonely and bored, with nothing else to do. Hiding away from the world in a dark corner, but yet connected with it. Anyway, fav stuff! (And yes, starting to play catch up here, choice projects need to be visited in good length! So sorry I've been so passive lately.)
Love the mottled floor with the dark patches , the textures of the walls. wonderful as a mono, as for the pose ? Don't ask me posing and getting someone to pose is a mystery to me. No matter how i try i never seem to get it right, it's an art form all on it's own...lol .....but a great shot all round....congrats a fav.
It's a great shot, fab concept & location. For some reason me & my OCD doesn't find that non-vertical corner to be a problem. I think the lean to the left makes the shot a bit more "human" in a way , and the lean goes well with the pose too. Straightening the corner will look good too, but the result will look more geometric and architectural, maybe not what you're after here... I'd crop a slice off the bottom, wider shots look better IMO.
Really good one! The lines are ok with this kind of shot with wide angle. Texture and light in the stairs is more important. When you look the picture, your eyes follow down the stairs to the subject.
I love the mood of your image and the perspective. Most of my critiques are similar to those of @jase_again, especially the ideas for expressing boredom. As far as the rails, they could be arrows; they take one's eye straight across the image! I also like how the shadow of the top rail comes out of the upper left-hand corner. Lighting and use of b&w.... brillant!
I love the way the steps and hand rail lead us to him ... perfect light too. Seems you can leave it to him to take care of the pose.. unless of course you want something really dark and sinister, which the location would lend itself to. It's a great shot
Its a great shot, if I have to be critical I'd just say its like a children's charity campaign poster. Little Jimmy has to walk up and down stairs all day to pay for his Crack habit...etc. but tha'ts not really a criticism as long as you're going for the subdued mood.
I think it's great. I want to see him better too though...closer, or facing the camera more...but maybe that's a good thing. Always leave them wanting more. I love the processing and the lines of the staircase and I think the mood of the shot is fantastic.
I guess I'm a little late with a comment since everyone seems to have covered it already. I absolutely love the mood and light and shadows. I would have taken another version as well, with him in the exact same pose, but looking straight at the camera with a hard stare. As is it's a Fav

Beautiful processing and the lighting is spot on. Fav.
The processing is great, BTW.
