a moment in time

i expect there will be many of these for this week's theme... this is an epic fail... i was trying to catch the second hand moving... and the fact that i feel i have to tell you that this is what i was trying to do is clear indication of failure because it should be obvious... but my husband stood there staring at it for a full minute and then said "i haven't a clue what you're trying to do" - so, uhm... yeah... epic fail ;p

it took me several tries to get the right shutter speed and light... used my ikea lamp and macro lens... processed from RAW in lightroom, converted to bw in nik silver efex... sepia toner added...
AC
It may not be what you hoped, but I certainly would not classify this as an epic fail. I love your processing, use of b&w, and lighting. I like it, but I am just a novice.

nice pov... sweet lighting also

Your lighting is fantastic. I love the black and white processing. The touch of warmth with the sepia is wonderful.

Looks like an old watch of ours. Love your tags, Northy. You are hilarious!! Really cool shot and processing. Even your fails are pretty sweet!
June 18th, 2013
Yeh, it doesn't show the movement, but I do like the processing and all the scratches.
June 18th, 2013
Scrachtastic. Like most of my watches
June 18th, 2013
I think it's great!!
June 18th, 2013
You have the double line of the hand so you have caught the movement but its good because its not fuzzy! Makes a great picture!
June 18th, 2013
De
It is only one moment, that requires no movement. Nice!
June 18th, 2013
Awesome
June 18th, 2013
Love all the textures here...it looks pretty dang cool to me!!!
June 18th, 2013
Very cool idea, great processing.
June 18th, 2013
Great shot, there is movement, when I first looked at this image it was 9am and now it is 9:10am..
June 18th, 2013
It looks really cool with all the scratches. You have produced a fab image, even if it doesn't meet your goal.
June 18th, 2013
Err. You did catch the second hand moving. There are very few watches where the second hand smoothly moves, it ticks (and tocks) from one point to the next, and you can clearly see that in this photo. Pretty much a perfect representation of the theme I would have said (except the theme is moment*s*, so you'll have to do over to show several seconds of movement!)

Why was it difficult getting the lighting/shutter speed right?
June 18th, 2013
I think it has a lot of impact even though it is not what you were going for. Very eye catching.
June 18th, 2013
Nice shot, even though you didn't achieve what you wanted. I photographed a metronome and it took ages to get the correct shutter speed, through trial and error. In the most successful shot I used the flash to capture the flash to capture the arm then the slow shutter picked up the movement afterwards.

It is frustrating when you can't get what you visualised, sadly happens to me a lot! However ths is a truly stunning shot. Love it.

wonderful shot

Love your POV and the processing and the light is fantastic. There was a great photo on here a while back where they'd taken the second hand moving - they used a longer exposure about 5 secs I think. But like Cheese Biscuit says it's not smooth so you had shadows of where the hand was rather than a sweeping movement.

cool pov

May not be what you wanted but I think it's really great - love the detail especially the scratches - it's a great photo for me

Not an "epic fail." Good tone. Like the grunginess of it.
June 18th, 2013
Totally works for me. :)
June 18th, 2013
this looks awesome to me! great lighting and love your processing as always! superb!
June 18th, 2013
@Cheesebiscuit yeah - i realized after the fact that the problem was how it was moving... it took me forever to figure out the timing because i'm sloooooooooow! just tons of trial and error...

@pennyp i tried the second curtain flash but couldn't get it to work... i think i just couldn't figure out the lighting... with a 1.6 second shutter speed i couldn't get enough light without the flash to get the first part of the movement without blowing everything out when the flash came on, even at the lowest setting... quite possibly i missed a trick on this, tho'...

This is so cool :)
June 18th, 2013
Not a fail -- and think what you learned setting up the shot. I like the BW and the contrast, warmed a bit with sepia.
June 18th, 2013
Lovely capture
June 19th, 2013
Super cool - Fav!
June 19th, 2013
It's still a great shot :)
June 19th, 2013
Wow. our watch looks hairy! It's kinda creepy. Oh, and always remember that Thomas Edison had 10 000 epic fails before he perfected the lightbulb - so you're in good company! ;-)
June 19th, 2013
Lovely shot
June 19th, 2013
Beautifully lit and toned - has a real vintage feel - love that you can see the scratches on the glass! No fail here!!! : )) fav
June 19th, 2013
I don't think the fact that it isn't the shot you intended takes away anything from its brilliance. I love the close, close, closeness accentuating all the detail and the wonderful POV. Fav xx
June 19th, 2013
Maybe an epic fail in terms of what you wanted to achieve, but not from my point of view! The thing is when you release a work of art into the world what matters is what the viewer/listener etc makes of it, not what you intended! This is great!
June 20th, 2013
Gorgeous processing - lovely textures and has a great vintage feel
June 20th, 2013
Wonderful shot and processing!
June 21st, 2013
Cool...and it moved...can see it!!
June 22nd, 2013
awesome!
June 22nd, 2013
fantastic POV - love this!
June 23rd, 2013
I can still see it moving though! This is brilliant - love the processing and tones and the scratchy rustic battled feel to this. :)

I haven't read the other comments, but I am pretty impressed by the owner of this watch...it looks well-loved (and nicely captured as such).
June 24th, 2013
So often what we consider an epic fail is actually a tour de force to others. Hope you don't mind if I Fav your Fail. ;^)
