fail by northy

fail

years ago i had a friend who really really really wanted a certain job... he finally got an interview... when he arrived for the interview, they sat him down at a table... there was a paperclip on the table... it was a test... he failed...

this is how i am choosing to represent today's mad minute word which is "dree"... as a verb this means to suffer or endure... as in "dree one's weird" meaning to suffer or submit to one's fate...

What? How's that a test? That's bizarre. >>

I like your perspective on this, very nice focus. :3

Fav, beautiful tones and razor thin DoF

It's not easy to straighten a paper clip

Dying to know what this test entailed...

How was the paper clip a test? So curious. Sounds rather random and odd. Love the depth in this image and the lovely greys. Have never heard the expression to dree one's weird- new vocab for me.

@paign @cmc1200 @carolinedreams it's a test of willpower... will you be able to resist fidgeting?
August 1st, 2013
Hell no! I'd manipulate that thing until there's a small scrap of metal. I, too, would have failed.

Sounds like a lucky escape to me -- I wouldn't accept a job that considered that to be a useful interview technique, whether I passed or failed. Interviews work both ways.

Nice shot, interesting effect with the shallow depth of field on the highlights.

What a great representation to go with the commentary. The lighting is terrific and the simplicity of the shot works well. What a sad story though, but I agree with Alexis -- a good escape.

Simple yet excellent image--love the lighting :)-

Cool shot

Lighting is fantastic. Great shot.

@northy I think your friend had a lucky escape! What a ridiculous pointless test. Idiotic and rather arrogant sounding.
August 1st, 2013
@northy too funny -- probably wouldn't want to work for an employer who was that into psychological testing. Love the image and the narrative. Really fantastic!!!

Super curious. Sounds like one of those google-style interviews.

What a great image! The depth of field works so well. Bizarre interviewing technique...not nice. The hiring manager probably read about it in a magazine and thought it was clever.

PS I just read your tags. Sorry you had a sucky day. I hope tomorrow is better.

A bit harsh... Psychological tests don't really cut the muster. I wouldn't have touched it, but what does that say about me?
August 1st, 2013
the dof and the grey scale of the picture makes the picture a fac for me!

That is a fantastic shot - very clever idea. And very stupid interview technique - hope it made him revise his opinion of t he company.

Excellent shot, great DoF. How on Earth did he fail with just a paperclip to show his talents?
August 1st, 2013
gah i hate interviews, but I love this shot
August 1st, 2013
Never heard of such a test but so many Interviews have got very weird and interesting techniques. Great shot though!

Its a great photo, great interpretation of the word. And I agree with everyone that you friend had a lucky escape. Obviously there weren't interested in employing creative people.

Such a stupid test but awesome shot! :)
August 1st, 2013
That's a test of the interviewers' perceptions - I would not be interesting in hiring someone who could sit in perfect stillness for no good reason unless I was looking for a meditation teacher - being unable to resist "fidgeting" could indicate a drive to be active and occupied - therefore denoting a willing worker - see? a case of different pov's!
That said, you have an awesome pov and a winning dof here and I love that the paperclip has obviously been "fidgeted" with!

Great focus. What a horrible story...

@abirkill I agree with Alex on this... if that's how they decided, then they are far too fickle to work for.. Amazing shot.
August 1st, 2013
Love the DoF. Makes me wonder what sort of job it was....

Great dof and light on the focused detail. Simple, neat but very effective composition.

Love this photo! I own a professional search firm and I hear all sorts of strange stories. In the past especially it seemed that people tried bazaar things to test the candidate. They can get in real trouble now days if they used questions that really isn't pertenant to the job. Most the time I hear and see the strange things from the candidate side.

Bizarre test but cool shot :)

amazing. you can turn anything into art :-)
August 4th, 2013
I can't imagine what sort of job it was if it wasn't creative. The paper clip begs to be artistically reshaped.

I'm very creative, But if I touched something on someone else's desk, I would be able to feel my mother slapping my hand from 800 miles and 30 years away. I'm creative, but very polite.
