abducted by aliens

ok - this did NOT work out as expected... back a couple days ago Lou posted this thread about using your iPad as a light source...
http://365project.org/discuss/tips-n-tricks/21521/use-your-tablet-ipad-as-a-light-source-softbox

then i found this app that let me do patterns for backgrounds, and i thought this might work for the glass refraction thing which has eluded me... but this doesn't look at all like what i expected... help?

i tried moving the glass different distances from the background... i tried focussing on the background and focussing on the glass.... and i tried different apertures...

this is one where i had the glass quite close to the backdrop and i focussed on the glass (and ended up with a major clean-up job in photoshop trying to get rid of all the bubbles... duh)...

anyhoo... if anyone has any idea where i went wrong, please let me know...
Maybe its all the cold medicine and wine but I think this is pretty darn cool!!

I love everything about this! Especially all the patterns in the stem.

What were you hoping for? I think one issue is that this pattern does not have a top or a bottom, so you really can't tell if it refracted and flipped upside down, right?

@archaeofrog this is true... but generally these images don't have a right way up, i think? i guess i was surprised at how difficult the focussing aspect was - maybe i should have gone for a narrower aperture? and i was also expecting the result to be either wonkier or neater somehow?

I think it's totally cool! ...and I can't see it leaning at all....and I don't drink...maybe my chair's crooked? lol

I think it's great, very abstract :D
March 10th, 2014
Its great to see the different shapes that are created with the glass!

When I use my Crystal ball it is nearly impossible to keep the background in focus. And the refraction is always upside down.Don't know how you kept the back in focus...but you did! I love this effect! A pattern with no up or down .Cool!.I downloaded this app too. Previously I only had Lightbox for iPad.this looks like fun!

This is really cool looking.
March 10th, 2014
it looks really cool to me

Instant fav! The deep aperture really is effective here -- love the pattern and the way you positioned the glass for symmetry. A great shot!
BTW, I'm glad to re-join get-pushed for next week if there's a partner for me.
March 10th, 2014
This is fantastic and I'll bet you'll never see another one just like it!!
March 10th, 2014
wow. might not be what you were aiming for but its pretty impressive. love all the lines and symmetry
March 10th, 2014
the distortions in the glass are really cool - fun patterns
March 10th, 2014
Great! I really like your shot and do not think there should be anything different about it!
March 10th, 2014
I can only say the same as everyone-else - this woks absolutely fine as it is... the reflections in the stem are a great bonus.
March 10th, 2014
ooooOOOh!
March 10th, 2014
I think this is perfect from technical point of view ... You just need to experiment with the backgrounds, glasses and positioning of the glass. Maybe you should raise the glass a bit higher ? There's a lot of refracting black from the bottom of the background in the glass--> lifting the glass higher would get more of the pattern into the glass ?

I really like it. The shapes and contrast here are great.

Realizing it wasn't your goal, it's still a really cool image. It's more than just a glass in front of something. It looks as if it has gone through a wormhole. And that's always fun.

I really like this, love the little column that shows up in the glass stem!
March 10th, 2014
Quite interesting. Very bold. I would agree that the little column up the glass stem is very pleasing to look at.
March 10th, 2014
No idea where you went wrong, I do like the outcome though. Well done.
March 10th, 2014
Cool
March 10th, 2014
Might not be what you wanted but it's brilliant - I wish I could make mistakes like that.
March 10th, 2014
ps FAV
March 10th, 2014
This HAS to be a FAV! :)
March 10th, 2014
I like eveything in that image too. And I'm not sure what you were expecting really. fav.

I really love how the pattern is reflected differently in different areas of the glass. Fav
March 11th, 2014
I absolutely love this. The effect is so interesting - fav
March 11th, 2014
I don't think anything went wrong, I love it as it is :-)
March 11th, 2014
Another easy fav, maybe it was not where you aimed at but I love it just the way it is
March 11th, 2014
absolutely brilliant, love it and fav
March 11th, 2014
Looks fab to me - I'm already having so much fun with your refraction challenge this week. :)
March 11th, 2014
This is cool- reminds me of a soccer ball and the Leaning Tower of Pisa's design.
March 12th, 2014
I understand its not what you wanted it to be, but holy crap it is AWESOME!!! FAV
March 13th, 2014
That's wicked creative.
March 15th, 2014
This is fab - was told by another 365er about your challenge and gave it a shot today - quite liked the result but now I have seen yours I feel I may need more practice!! Ace. Fav and follow.
March 16th, 2014
Craptastic mess? Hardly! I have no ipad, but am pretty sure this is cool.
