Newark was a Royalists stronghold in the English civil war. The town was besieged on three occasions. In June 1645 the king’s forces were defeated in the Battle on Naseby, the cavalry from Newark had fought there with the king. In November 26465 the final siege of Newark began, the garrison, under protest accepted the kings May’s 1646 order to surrender. Much of the town’s defences destroyed, including the castle which was left much as we see it today.
