Kelham Hall by oldjosh

Kelham Hall

The Manners- Sutton acquired the estate on 5 May 1647. This is the third hall; the other two were destroyed by fire; designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott completed in 1863 a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture. In 1903 after running into financial difficulties the Manners-Sutton family sold the hall to the Society of the Sacred Mission. Becoming a monastery which closed in 1972. It was then used as council office until September last year. It is now used as a wedding venue. The grounds are still open to the public, there is a tea room and tours of the hall are available.
In the 1960’s we lived in Newark and the Salvation Army’s over 60’s club had a visit to the monastery, we often joined them on outings but for this the coach was full, so with my sisters and the daughter of the club’s leader we cycled to Kelham. I don’t remember much of the visit and vague memories of the building but as soon as I caught a glimpse of it from the bus I immediately recognised the building. I didn’t have much time today but will go back and have a tour of the building
Amazing building
