Stoodley Pike by oldjosh

Stoodley Pike

Today with my sister and two friends we set out on a 10 mile walk (which became 11 ½ miles due to a footpath diversion) to walk a section of the Pennine Way from the White House to the Pike and back.

The inscription above the entrance states
Stoodley Pike, a beacon monument.
Erected by public subscription commenced in 1814 to commemorate the surrender of Paris to the Allies and finished after the Battle of Waterloo when peace was established in 1815.
By a strange coincident the Pike fell on the day the Russian Ambassador left \London before the declaration of war with Russia in 1854, was rebuilt when peace was restored in 1856.
Restored and lightning conductor fixed 1889.

The Pike is 121 feet (37 meters) high, the hill is 1,300 feet (400 meters) high and there are 39 steps up to the balcony
Looked a lovely day for a good walk,, thanks for the history to very interesting
