Kings Cross Station, London
Information on the plaque beside him
Chief mechanical engineer 1911 -1923 Great Northern Railway, 1923-1941 London & North Eastern Railway.
Based in an office at this station, he designed powerful, elegant and fast locomotives including the world famous Flying Scotsman” and “mallard”, the fastest steam locomotive in the world. His streamlined trains departed from this station. They set new standards of comfort, speed and safety, and were the first truly high speed trains.
Sculptor: Hazel Reeves FRSA
Placed by the Gresley Society Trust on 5th April 2016, the 75th anniversary of his death.
When I grow up I'm going to drive Mallard. Each year I ask Santa to bring him for me...Joshua (age 7) says that at 174 years, I'm TOO old (or more likely dead) so I can't ever drive Mallard and he's too big to fit on my drive! Important statue of a man who created dreams.
