Castle Donnington Leicestershire by oldjosh

Castle Donnington Leicestershire

There is very little left of the castle now.
The sign depicts Donnington hall built for Frances Rawdon-Hastings, 2nd Earl of Moira, building started in 1790. It is now the head office of Norton Motorcycles.
East Midland Airport built on the site of former RAF Castle Donnington site and land purchased from the parishes of Kegworth, Hemington and Lockington
Donnington Park motor racing circuit and now has the worlds largest collection of Formula One and Grand Prix vehicles.
The Key House in the High Street, timber framed part of the house shown on the sign is dated 1636, the rear wing of timber and brick was built in the 17th century the brick-built bay, painted white is dated 1899, The house was restored in the 20th century and the dates 1953-81.The porch dated 1595, probably came from the house across the road when it was demolished. A key hangs beside each date hence its name.
Presumably the basket represents the market.
Love the sign :)
