The Village is recorded in the Doomsday Book as Niwebold meaning “new build”. The suffix Verdon was a acquired from Nicholas de Verdon, owner of the manor in 1226.
The sign shows a miner and a Farmer in conversation. The village was originally an agriculture centre, in the 1850’s Newbold Verdon grew due coal mining in the area, this has mow ceased.
