In 1896, when the Olympic Games were revived, all the medals were made of silver. That was changed in 1904 when gold medals were awarded to athletes who placed first in their competition and bronze medals were awarded to those who placed third. The silver medal then became the medal given to second place. The host city mints all the medals awarded during the Olympics. From 1928 to 1968 the design was always the same. The front and back were drawn by artist Guiseppe Cassioli. From 1972 until the year 2000, one of Cassioli's design remained on one side of the medal and the host city custom designed the other side. In 2004 during the Atlanta games, both sides became customized by the host city. It is an honor to win a medal of any metal and an accomplishment that takes a tremendous amount of dedication, sacrifice and passion.
I think you have got the best silver photo yet. The edges are still gold but you haven't turned it into B& W which does show it off! That lovely white light that silver has!
it is always an honour to represent one's country. great start to the week with this beautiful silver star. where was this during the star days last month?
@summerfield- please ignore the last comment! I was falling asleep as I was typing!! I have no idea what I was attempting to say there. I'm off to bed!
Lovely shot! I like the star shape!
I wish more of our media would focus on the competing rather than the winning. Currently anyone watching the news would think that it's worse to get a silver medal than to not qualify in the first place!
And I was just wondering last night if the design of the medals stay the same regardless of the host country! Thank you for the information! Great shot, I love the lighting and the texture. 8)
@summerfield lol Well, now it looks like my wacky message did finally delete- you would have read it thought, "What is going on?!" So now you can just read my hearty thanks and wonder what it looked like!
@salza Thanks Sally! @alia_801 Thanks Alia! It's actually a little baking mold for Swedish cookies my mother bought me ages ago- apparently an early American style. It's always been a decoration for me. I've never used it for baking! (oh and @summerfield - I didn't use it for last month's star because I did use it way back towards the beginning of my first year in another shot for a tag challenge- but- long story short- you'll see why I decided to use it again this week as the week goes along...) @myautofocuslife Thanks Livia! @sangwann Thanks Dione!
a beautiful capture! the silver is perfect! And thanks for the trivia, very interesting. I'm motivated to try your challenge ( a little late, but this may be the push i need). I love the Olympics, and look forward to seeing everyone's creative ideas! Thanks!!!
I love this shot, Anne - great pov, and the color is wonderful! I posted a comment on the interview page thanking you for you kind words - I also gave some suggestions for you upcoming trip to Boston.
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I think everyone feels the same as you do! @potsbypam Thanks Pam! @zandme Thanks Tasha! And thanks for the follow too! This challenge is a weekly thing and it's never too late to join! Any day of the week is fine, so welcome!! @paulavdmerwe Thanks Paula! @automaticslim Thanks Andy! The Paralympics is perhaps even more impressive (if I'm correct in my definition of it) because of the physical obstacles the athletes overcome to play their sport, let alone compete in it. @sparkleplenty1 Thank you so much Joyce! And thank you so much for the follow! I truly enjoyed your interview and now I'll look forward to seeing your wonderful pictures too! @henrir Thanks Henri!
I am reading down your comments to see if you say what this photo is of...cannot see it. I love your information about the medals! Thanks for that. I also saw someone saying how impressive they'd be in real person (to see a medal) and I'll bet that WOULD be impressive!
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen!
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie! I took the shot in my favorite spot for afternoon light because it's a great spot for contrasting objects which great shadows and high lights.
@karenann Thanks Karenann!
