A Rainy Day a la Xavier Miserachs by olivetreeann

A Rainy Day a la Xavier Miserachs

What a miserable day here! It's damp, rainy and all around rough on the joints! While out running a few errands I thought I'd try my hand at the neorealistic style of Xavier Miserachs. It seems that many of his pictures featured busy street scenes or beaches with lots of people. They were usually random and candid shots- a brief glimpse of life, a second at a time. One thing that seemed to fascinate him was signs. They occupy a predominant spot in many of his photos. So I decided to include them in my shots today. It was a little difficult to capture them between raindrops, but I was also going for that realistic edge he did so well.
Great b&w

I really like this Ann, the wetness of the day certainly adds to the busy scene

@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@nicolecampbell Thank you Nicole!
@homeschoolmom Thank you Lisa! I spent some time scrolling through A LOT of his photos! By the time I was finished, the words busy, people, life, crowded, as-is with no frills, and random candids seemed to sum up his style to me. The majority of his street scenes involved signs or were signs alone. He never really did stylized portraits either. All his people pictures were "in the moment" even if it meant presenting the person in a less than attractive angle or pose. I knew I wasn't going to be able to replicate his style exactly so I tried to translate it into my world. This is definitely a random shot of the Poconos on a rainy day and it doesn't look pretty!
@daisymiller Thank you Daisy!

What a cool idea! This really does have his 'feel' (I was looking at his shots knowing I would have time downtown today but didn't follow through). I really like what you've done here! It's a perfect solution to a rainy day.

Great BW photo I like how have you played with black and light areas and also with signs. Thank you for your submission.

@homeschoolmom Don't worry about of Miserach's work in excess and submit your own vision of a street shot if you wish.

As I have been able to understand, due to my decreased photographic language skills, Miserach's works introduce an interaction with people or signs in photo frame against herself or the surrounding environment where he is pointing with his camera. For example:

"A sign that points to a cleric" that hint you his walking direction on frame.
"A sign advertising for someone" and the door bell in the other side.
People in the street doing their way or interacting with photographer looking to the camera in a common life environment.

But finally the goal for me IMO is to take photos of your local city or town that will show to us who the life is going where you life getting close into the action or keeping a little of distance as you feel confortable.

I hope this I'll help you... :)

I'm glad you've all responded so well to this shot. It was such a dreary day- but this is quite typical of how the rain effects us here.

You succeeded. looks great in black and white and you have your sign in it as well. I don't know what is worse, rainy days or hoping for rain to get rid of more snow.

I just saw the red flag and saw you're commenting on my pictures while I comment on yours.

yes, it has shades of miserachs written all over it, ann! the signs, the cars, the grittiness, etc. well done!

I think your shot fits perfectly with this week's artist challenge theme and the work of Miserachs. I took a look at his photos when the challenge was announced and realized there was nothing around here that would be comparable so didn't pursue it. But you had a good eye for it when you captured this scene. Very well done!

Nice shot, Ann! The b&w adds a more gloomy effect since it's already raining. Awesome you are following another photographer. Kudos to you. Well done :)

@bruni Thanks Bruni! I hadn't realized there's a flag that does that.
@summerfield Thanks Vikki! LOL I took this and thought, "Boy that is an ugly picture! It'll work."
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I didn't think I'd find anything around here that would be like his pictures- but then I started thinking about how some of them were rather raw. That made me think of some of the uglier parts of the Poconos and I decided that if I drove past something that didn't look so great I'd take a quick snap.
@prttblues Thanks Bev! I hadn't planned on doing this one- but it all sort of come together on Saturday and I ended up with three shots that worked.

@bruni Oh- I thought that was just for when folks have left comments on your posts- but yes, it would show up if you were on at the same time.
