Today was our final garlic farm outing. It was rainy and overcast but it didn't matter because we were in the barn watching while the garlic was prepped for the upcoming Garlic Festival. This cluster was still hanging in the rafters upstairs, but most of the garlic had been taken down. The farm workers cut off the dried stalks, brush off the dirt, peel away the outer layers of the skin and then cut off the roots from the bottom. It won't be long before this cluster will get the "royal treatment" as well. One of the workers told me it takes them an average of 8 hours to prepare enough garlic to fill a bushel basket. Believe that's a lot of garlic and that takes a lot of hard work!
Very interesting photo and narrative! I tried to grow garlic once and didn't have any success, so it is fascinating to hear the preparation needed when it does grow.
It is a lot of work taking the skin off - is that what you mean? I saw a largish bag of garlic today all peeled and in a plastic bag with all the air taken out. Only $4! All that work!
I can't thank you all enough for the kind and gracious comments, the views and the favs! So pleased to see this on both TP and PP! I'm going to miss the farms- but I'll be back in Spring for next year's planting and probably shooting other crops as well. I think I've found a niche!

Thank you Diane!
Thank you Sandy and thank you for the fav too!
I have to pick out four photos for the Garlic Festival Display and so far I've decided that this one will be one of them for all the reasons you mentioned.
