Two lighthouses guide mariners into Portsmouth Harbor (a.k.a. The New Castle Light) is on the island of New Castle in New Hampshire while the Whaleback Light (posted on the 18th) is located in Kittery, Maine. The Portsmouth Light is part of the Coast Guard Station and was first established in 1771. Today's 48 foot tower was built in 1878. It shows a fixed green light that can be seen up to 12 nautical miles away (although I confess, I did not see it when taking my photos!). When needed, its fog horn blasts every 10 seconds. Like many other sites along the Maine coast, several structures have stood here and with each new light the height has increased and the building material improved. The final build in 1878 gave the lighthouse a cast iron skeleton. Up until 1902 the structure was painted a reddish brown. The last lighthouse keeper served here until 1948 when the Coast Guard took over. The American Lighthouse Foundation now has stewardship over it in partnership with the Coast Guard.
Once again I am bombarding you with many pictures- but there's only one more batch to go and then it's back to normal posting in June- phew! Thanks for your patience- and please- don't feel obligated to comment on them all.
