Life and Death by olivetreeann

Life and Death

I apologize for the graphic nature of this shot. It's not something I would normally shoot or even look for. I had just put out my bird feeder when this hawk swooped through my neighbor's yard and landed on her shed with his breakfast. I was sure he'd fly away before I got my camera, but he stayed put. It is not often I get to see the Red Tail Hawks this close and for this long. Normally they are found closer to fields and rivers. The Red Shoulder Hawks are more akin to our wooded environment, so when the opportunity presented itself, even though my heart broke for the poor squirrel, the photographer in me knew it was an opportunity not to be missed.
A fantastic capture of nature and the food chain.

No apology needed. The power and ability of these birds of prey is amazing. They don't kill for the sake of it.

Wonderful shot - super chance for the photo when he had other things on his mind. I remember getting within about 15' of one when he was eating a fish on the bank. Really nice focusing.

Fantastic capture. I am always sad when a hawk kills an animal, but I realize that the hawks have to eat to keep alive.

No need to apologise although it doesn't leave too much for the imagination. What a great opportunity to capture this amazing bird which is, after all, just living out its existence.

@helenhall Thank you Helen! Yes, it was difficult for me to see- but documenting it helped a little. I understand all the natural aspects to it and so life goes on as they say.

A fantastic capture though I like to pretend this doesn’t happen. It is survival of the fittest and a part of life. :(
