Resilience by olivetreeann

Resilience

I saw this little Petunia springing up by the door of the building where I see my Orthopedic doctor and go for physical therapy the other day. It really "spoke to me" as they say since it made me think of the remarkable journey I've been on since last December.

It actually began 2 years ago when I thought I was feeling the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in my hip. As each month passed it became increasingly difficult to walk, climb stairs and other day to day motions but what could I do? There's really no cure for it. I also noticed that as the arthritis progressed my knee became increasingly dislocated. Finally last December everything snapped- and I thought I'd torn my meniscus. Long story short is that I never had arthritis in my hip and I never tore my meniscus. Although acupuncture helped with the pain it wasn't resolving the issue, so on the advice of my acu doctor, I made an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. He ordered x-rays and the reason for all the pain and difficult became apparent. My right knee was 2 inches to the left of where it was supposed to be! Fast forward to July 22 and knee surgery. After time in the recovery room, they wheeled me into my hospital room where even under all the bandages and such I could see my knee was now positioned over the ankle where it was supposed to be! Wow!!

The human body is an amazing thing. In spite of the crazy placement of my knee, I managed to get around but it wasn't easy. But more importantly, when given the proper treatment I was surprised at how resilient it is. Sure, I'm having to remind myself I can now put weight on it and I have to do some exercises to wake up the muscles that haven't worked properly for a long time- but I'm bouncing back. And my hip, it doesn't hurt at all- it was my knee all along.

I feel like this little Petunia- give me just enough dirt and I'll blossom!
Great story. Definitely shows resilience, as does the petunia finding the tiniest bit of soil.

Just the best comparison! Good to read your narrative. Jerry told his ortho doc that his hip was bone on bone, it was his lower back all along. 😊

Great comparison. After reading this, a warning to us all, it might be something other than what we think. I suppose I should get to an ortho doctor, I've been having some pains in my back, hip, knee and ankle and have been sure it was just more osteoarthritis.
