I think the title says it all. This morning a group of us went up to Barry Park to listen to a talk about humpback whales migrating north for the winter. As we were sat on the rocks listening to the talk the whales were passing us by. We must have seen about 30 whales in the couple of hours we were there.
This isn't the best picture in the world, but this whale was quite a way off from the rocks.
What a way to spend a winter's day. 20 degrees C, sunshine and watching the whales go by.
I may go up to Boat Harbour tomorrow and see if I can get a better photo there as they could be closer to the shore from there.
I do envy you this experience right on your doorstep. We head to Canada again in a couple of weeks and hope for some sightings but I'd love to be able to do that in my own country!
Still a great shot, the white of the tail stands out beautifully. I was lucky to see one on my last trip to the barrier reef. They are beautiful to watch.
How wonderful to sit and watch the whales. It reminds me to get out there and do it too. This is great timing, with the whale breeching. The whales are so spectacular.
@nanm Thanks so much @kathiecb Pretty huge I think they are about 15 metres or 50 ft in length fully grown. @golftragic thanks for the fav Marnie. I will keep it a secret from the Japanese. @april16 Thanks so much for the fav April. We usually go out on whale watch boats, but this was just from the rocks on the shore. Amazing to see them.
@leestevo Yes, it was amazing just watching them swimming by. We usually go out on a whale watch at some time during the season, but this was just from the land. Have you seen any whales at Shellharbour? there are so many going up the coast at the moment.
@yaorenliu@neatz@sioux@wanabe@paulaw@joeyc Thank you all so much. We are so lucky to get such a spectacular display every day at the moment as the whales migrate north from the Antarctic to give birth in warmer waters. The good thing is we get to see them all again in about September/October as they travel south again with their babies.
Winter is being just as kind to us. 22C today and similar predicted for the coming week.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs. This wasn't the best picture in the world, but it was so amazing to get a photo of a whale breaching from the shore. we usually go out on one of the boats to do a whale watch, but haven't managed it so far this year.
The day before I took this picture the famous Migaloo (a white humpback whale) was spotted by people at this same spot. so sorry I missed that one. Apparently Migaloo is about 28 years old and now it is believed that there is also a 'son of Migaloo' too.
We are so lucky here to get so many whales migrating north so close to the shoreline.
