As today is the last day of the 31 days of rust I thought I would add this picture of one of the shacks at Tin City which is situated on Stockton Beach Between Anna Bay and Newcastle.
There are about 11 shacks at Tin City and, of course, there is no electricity. Some of the shacks have solar panels and generators for electricity, their water is supplied by bore water from underground.
There are no more shacks allowed to be built now and if any of the existing shacks are demolished in high winds etc they are not allowed to be rebuilt, but they are very often dug out when the sand shifts and buries them.
You can go on 4WD tours to Tin city but a group of us parked on Nelson Bay Road and just walked down the track through the bush down to the dunes and then climbed over the dunes to Tin City, it was about 5 or 6 km each way and quite a hike up and down the dunes. We each had a bunch of twigs and branches and stuck them in the ground at intervals so we could follow our trail back again. The dunes go on for about 22 km so would be easy to miss the exit back to our cars.
I posted a collage about Tin City in my Port Stephens theme album a few months ago and if anyone is interested here is a link to a story about Tin City.
@leestevo You are brave taking your 4wd on the beach here. A friend of mine took her Xtrail here and got stuck, had to be towed out again.
Yes Tin City did feature in one of the Mad Max movies.
@ethelperry The dunes go from Anna Bay all the way to Stockton at Newcastle and there are miles and miles of sand. They have 4wd tours out to Tin City and the wreck of the ship the Sygna and so I suppose that damages the area somewhat. Every time we go to Birubi Beach it looks different because in storms the sand shifts all the time.
@onewing thank you Babs, maybe the dunes have been there forever and are not caused by human intervention. I wouldn't like to holiday ion a shack with the wind blowing.
