The Big Mozzie by onewing

The Big Mozzie

The Big Mozzie also known as Ossie the Mozzie a Hexam Grey mosquito has always been the symbol at Hexham Bowling Club and in 1994 the 3.5 metre- high Ossie was built at a cost of $17,200. Then Lord Mayor of Newcastle Cr John McNaughton officially unveiled Ossie on March 10, 1994.

Ossie has had some cosmetic surgery because of damage from the elements and other insects over the years and his first makeover was in 2004-05. He received a second makeover in 2008 and another nip and tuck in 2010.

When the Roads and Maritime Service ordered Ossie be moved back four metres for widening of the Pacific Highway, he received some animation including glowing green eyes, a new red belly and a neon nose.

Over the years, Ossie has gone from a Hexham Grey to a Hexham rainbow to brighten up the lives of all who visit the club and who pass by him.

A few weeks ago I posted a photo of Bob Skelton the Bush Poet and he has written a poem about the Hexham Grey mosquito. If anyone is interested here is a link.

It sounds like the mozzie has been through a lot. It's great that they keep up the maintenance on it.

Great shot... a change from the Big Pineapple or the Big Banana

Great how this has evolved over the years, he is a rather appealing mozzie (if there can be such a thing!)

This makes me laugh, I remember one of my very early trips to OZ and bringing home a keyring with an ozzie mozzie in it, they are huge compared to our mozzies.

Love the big things...if there a big thing in a place that I visited...I take a photo if it. I have not got this one as yet.

What a little beauty, thanks for sharing his story Babs :)

This would be enough to ensure I don't visit - I hate mosquitos
October 6th, 2014
Sounds like Mozzie is a great fellow! A wonderful shot and so nice to know about him now! :)

Big Pineapple, Big Banana, Big Galah, Big Prawn, Big Cow I can handle but a Big Mozzie????? It's too much I tell you.
October 6th, 2014
I'm off Mosquitos at the moment as I have about 30 bites! At least you could swat this one! Great picture.

Great shot and interesting story Babs

This is a neat sculpture - thanks for the history about him too.

Ossie is a great looks Mozzie
October 6th, 2014
Rather a splendid mozzie - much better as a sculpture than the real thing. Interesting background information too.
October 6th, 2014
Very BIG, fun
October 6th, 2014
I've heard of big mosquitos but this takes the cake. I'm imagining the size of the fly swatter.
October 7th, 2014
Terrific story and sculpture Babs, thanks for sharing both.
October 7th, 2014
That is very interesting
October 7th, 2014
Great capture of him...thank goodness they are not that big!!!
October 7th, 2014
such a funny symbol for a bowling club but I think he is gorgeous
October 7th, 2014
Oh wow! What a great find! Thankfully they're not really that big!
October 7th, 2014
Great capture lovely focus and colours, well spotted Babs, well you could hardly miss Ossie could you, had a few mozzie bits in my time, definitely don't want one from Ossie lol;)

@karlow75 You are right Kane. He has survived more times than Rasputin.
October 7th, 2014
@beryl Thanks Beryl, you wouldn't keep a live Hexham Grey alive for long they are huge and give a nasty bite.
October 7th, 2014
@julzmaioro Thanks Julia. There are so many big things here aren't there.
October 7th, 2014
@paulaw Thanks Paula. the only appealing mozzie is a dead one. Apart from Ozzie of course.
October 7th, 2014
@rustymonkey Thanks Karen. Hexham grey's are larger than most mozzies here in Australia. They are huge.
October 7th, 2014
@leestevo If ever you go to Hexham it would be best to cover yourself in Aeroguard first though because the real Hexam greys are huge.
October 7th, 2014
@nanm Thanks Nancy.
October 7th, 2014
@gigiflower Cover yourself in mozzie spray if you do go to Hexham though. If you visit Ash Island which is at Hexham there are thousands of them.
October 7th, 2014
@terryliv I agree the big mozzie is a bit much isn't it, but he is nothing on the real thing, the live Hexham grey's are deadly.
October 7th, 2014
@chimfa Nothing more annoying than mozzie bites. Hope you don't get Ross River virus or Dengue fever in Spain.
October 7th, 2014
@kathiecb Thanks Kathie. You need a big mozzie swatter for the real Hexham grey's too. They are enormous and give a very nasty bite.
October 7th, 2014
@golftragic Thanks Marnie. The real Hexham grey's are huge too and Ossie the Mozzie here has been given a bit of a facelift over the years and I suspect that the red on him is supposed to be blood. I think the donor must have died.
October 7th, 2014
@eyesmile Thanks Gena. Real Hexham grey's are pretty huge too and give a very nasty bite.
October 7th, 2014
@annied Thanks Annie. Ossie is indeed a handsome chap, but the real things are deadly.
October 8th, 2014
@kwiksilver Thanks Gillian. The real Hexham grey's may not be actually this size, but they are pretty close ha ha,.
October 8th, 2014
@pcoulson Thanks Peter. Ossie is huge I agree and the real Hexham grey's are massive too. I have never seen such huge mozzies as they are anywhere else in Australia. If ever you go to Ash Island which is at Hexham you have to dip yourself in mozzie spray or you will get bitten alive.
October 8th, 2014
@sioux @hermann @flyrobin @lilminimonka @thistle @seattlite @dide @scarybird @dolphin @neatz @bkbinthecity Thanks so much. Ossie is well known around Hexham and his real relatives the Hexham grey mosquitos are pretty well known too, they are huge and give quite a nasty bite.
October 8th, 2014
Not a mossie fan but Ossie is super!
