The Bogey Hole by onewing

The Bogey Hole

Thanks so much for your lovely comments on my photos over the last couple of days. I am trying my best to catch up today, but I hear thunder in the distance so the computer will be turned off shortly. I hope to catch up later this evening once the storm has past.

It is so warm and humid at the moment and I am sure when the storm has moved on it will be even more humid.

While we were in Newcastle yesterday we walked down to the Bogey Hole. It has been closed for a while due to falling rocks but is open to the public again now.

It was a really hot day yesterday, so lots of people took advantage of a dip to cool off.

The Bogey Hole was constructed by order of Lieutenant-Colonel James Thomas Morisset in about 1820 for his own personal use. Morisset was Commandant of Newcastle from 1819 to 1822. It was known, originally as the Commandants Baths. The name Bogey Hole was applied afterwards and comes from the indigenous word meaning to bathe. The Bogey Hole was constructed using convict labour.
What a great place for a dip on a hot day. They sure made good use of convict labour back in the day.

Fabulous capture and amazing history Babs. We have something similar here, although not as large as this one. Ours has been demolished in the meantime. Fav

What a fun place to be able to go! And a terrific image of its scale.
January 2nd, 2018
Fabulous pov! It’s just starting to thunder down here too
January 2nd, 2018
A great bird’s eye view of a good place to cool off. The image lighting looks like it was taken from a drone.
January 2nd, 2018
It looks cool and clear! Funny word for it but it would be famous.!
January 2nd, 2018
Ive never actually seen that Babs, must put it on my list for future trips up that way I love your POV
January 2nd, 2018
It looks like the perfect spot to be, love the colour of the water
January 2nd, 2018
Love to see it with a rough sea :)
January 2nd, 2018
Great viewpoint - did you take it with a wide angle lens?
January 2nd, 2018

January 2nd, 2018
Looks very inviting on a hot and humid day, lovely candid capture, did you take your cossie as well as your camera with you Babs:)
January 2nd, 2018
Beautiful capture and the sea is so inviting. Makes me yearn for Summer. We have many rock-hewn baths like this here, most of them much smaller.
January 2nd, 2018
so clean and clear, well looked after, that one is great!
January 2nd, 2018
Looks inviting. 😊
January 2nd, 2018
@littleconnie The poor convicts really had it tough.
January 2nd, 2018
@ludwigsdiana There are two large ocean baths in Newcastle built in the early 1900s but this one for personal use by the Commandant is the first
January 2nd, 2018
@kjarn Thanks Kathy, the thunder came and went quickly.
January 2nd, 2018
@dide Not a drone Dianne, just taken from the steps leading down to the Bogey Hole.
@taffy @nicolecampbell @gilbertwood @julzmaioro @happysnaps @louisanoffke @pusspup Thanks, it was closed for a while to fix falling rocks from the cliffs, but opened again now ready for visitors to keep cool the heat of summer.
January 2nd, 2018
@maggiemae Bogey apparently is an aboriginal word meaning bath
January 2nd, 2018
@cruiser I think it has been opened up for the summer.
January 2nd, 2018
@jeneurell Yes Jennifer wide angle lens.
January 2nd, 2018
@pcoulson No Peter I didn't take my cossie. We were visiting friends in Newcastle and just walked down to the Bogey Hole as it has been opened again for the summer.
January 2nd, 2018
We used the word bogey for a bath when we were kids. That's a fantastic place.
January 2nd, 2018
This is a great capture. Love the term “Bogey Hole”!
January 2nd, 2018
Wow Babs, fascinating place, thank you for sharing :)
January 2nd, 2018
Oh my word, that looks positively wonderful.
January 2nd, 2018
What a lovely scene, makes me smile Babs because as you know here in the UK we are wrapped up in coats and wearing hats and scarves and today umbrellas are in use as well. Interesting information and interesting to see how this little bathing area has been hewn out of the rock like that.
January 2nd, 2018
Looks like a great place for a dip and no worries about being stung or eaten :))
January 2nd, 2018
I love your pov. Great shot, Babs.
January 2nd, 2018

January 2nd, 2018
Excellent perspective, scale
January 2nd, 2018
Great pov and capture
January 2nd, 2018
That must be a fantastic place to swim with the sea just the other side of the rocks. Really like your pov.
January 2nd, 2018
Well done
January 2nd, 2018
A lovely shot and a very interesting history.
January 2nd, 2018
Great shot of those people having a nice time.
January 2nd, 2018
Interesting story. Don't think we'd get away with employing convicts like that today. Just curious why you need to shut your computer during a storm?
January 2nd, 2018
If only we could get away with putting todays convicts to such good use!
January 2nd, 2018
So many people enjoying themselves and love the blues and greens. Storm Eleanor is on her way here!
January 2nd, 2018
Boo
ooh nice!
January 2nd, 2018
What a wonderful photo of a wonderful place. I wish there were more like this here but I guess our weather is not conducive :)))
January 2nd, 2018
Lovely place to cool down.
January 2nd, 2018
It is surprising what arduous building projects convicts have been put to work on in so many countries, from which we now benefit. Lovely shot and I hope the storm passed without harm.
January 2nd, 2018
A great name for this swimming place! Nice & calm inside that inner wall.
January 2nd, 2018
I've been looking at photos of people jumping in the sea around the UK for a New Year dip, I'd much rather be at the Bogey Hole!
January 3rd, 2018
Looks like a wonderful place to swim.
January 3rd, 2018
Such a cool place
January 3rd, 2018
@beryl No I managed to stay dry. The moss on the side of the pool looked very slippery so I didn't venture over that.
January 3rd, 2018
@bella_ss @louannwarren @hermann @leananiemand @stephanies @merrelyn @mittens @jesperani @paul10 @radiogirl @craftymeg @seattlite @carolmw @flowerfairyann @sdutoit @josiegilbert @pyrrhula @suzanne234 @megpicatilly @huvesaker @mandygravil @kwiksilver @happypat @inthecloud5 @danette @sarahricho Thanks for your lovely comments. It was a very hot day and pity I didn't have my bathers with me. Quite a walk back up to the car from the Bogey Hole though, so maybe it was a good idea not to swim there.
@kathiecb Our main computers are desktop and plugged into the mains. If we have a power surge it can affect the hard drive. That happened to David's computer a couple of years ago. Good job he had everything backed up.
I could use the laptop on battery during a storm, but decided to do other things while the storm was on.
January 3rd, 2018
@helenhall Luckily no damage during this storm. We lost two huge branches from our large blackbutt tree on Christmas Eve during a storm and spent Christmas Day morning out with the chain saw because the branches were strewn across the road.
January 3rd, 2018
Wow! That is so cool! Awesome shot! :-)
January 3rd, 2018
This looks amazing!
January 3rd, 2018

What a wonderful swimming hole.. Love your POV...
January 3rd, 2018
Very interesting POV. I love that swimming pool. So pretty.
January 3rd, 2018
@onewing That explains it. You sure don't want a surge. Yikes
January 3rd, 2018
Sure does look like a great place to cool off. Good shot!
January 4th, 2018

January 4th, 2018
