Oops!

This is the last of my crystal ball shots taken at Birubi last week.

There is a bit of a story behind this picture. I climbed up one of the dunes and placed the ball next to the dried grass and started taking pictures. The sun was low in the sky and it was about half an hour before sunset. As I was taking photos I thought to myself 'I can smell smoke' I took a couple more photos and then saw a flame coming from the grass and smoke rising above it.

If you look closely you can see the flame and smoke to the left of the ball. I grabbed the ball, put it in my pocket, poured sand on the grass to put out the flame, took a quick look around to see if anyone was watching and made a hasty retreat. Well not exactly hasty, because to go from a kneeling position on soft sand dunes with a camera in one hand and camera bag in the other is no easy task at my age.

Luckily nobody spotted me and who would have thought that the ball would ignite a flame so quickly.

I didn't realize just how easy it was to be an arsonist. If somebody had said to me 'I'll give you a thousand dollars if you can light a flame with the sun and a glass ball' I would never be able to do it in a month of Sundays, but it isn't as difficult as you would think.

I didn't realize until I got home that I had actually got a shot of the smoke and flame. Oops.

Moral of the story, keep the glass ball away from dry grass.
!!!!!! Oh my! How funny though. Good thing you noticed it and put the flames out! You really are getting value for your $10, aren't you? Who knew it could make you an arsonist too? There's no end to the fun....... nice pic too!

A lucky escape I think!

Ha haa .. we've got the evidence ! What a great story to go with this photo. At least it was worth it for this great shot. Fav.
May 16th, 2018
Thankfully no harm done to you or the grass, just a fab photo and an amazing story .
May 16th, 2018

May 16th, 2018
Wonderful story, I shall have to be careful when I take my crystal ball photographs, good laugh, and no harm done.
May 16th, 2018
Love it. Even got my ball out today, so will put some pics up for you to see
May 16th, 2018
Oh no! Be careful not to leave it on the sunny windowsill! Good pic again.
May 16th, 2018
Another great capture, you picked a perfect day for capturing images with your ball
May 16th, 2018
The story is as good as the actual photo! And your quick action and guilt goes with the picture! Well done for both! fav
May 16th, 2018
Love your story and your photo Babs :)
May 16th, 2018
Fabulous shot and story 😄
May 16th, 2018
I like your crystal ball shots. Another lovely picture.
May 16th, 2018
Oh wow, amazing how easy that could happen! It’s a nice pic and glad no harm came of it
May 16th, 2018
Haha, great balls of fire Babs but a great shot nevertheless :)
May 16th, 2018
I'm so glad you did not catch anything on fire Babs. We had a very similar situation when we were out with mine on the weekend. But it was my hubby 'teaching' my daughter how to catch one piece of dried grass on fire with the ball. LOL Btw great shot!
May 16th, 2018
my goodness. I guessed what you were going to say as soon as you started your story. Just as well you werent in the bush. A timely warning. By the way dont hold it in your hand either. It burns very quickly.
You ended up with a great shot though Babs. Couldnt have done better if you tried :)
May 16th, 2018
Great story. At least you were able to put the fire out quickly, so no harm. Great shot showing the smoke.
May 16th, 2018
Great capture Babs, luckily no harm done :)
May 16th, 2018
Great photo again with your ball. Love the story and glad everything turned all ok in the end. There was an element of funny there even though I realise how serious it could have been for you.

You reminded me of when we were children and played with magnifying glasses in the sunlight and putting them over paper - and sometimes our hands. Not very sensible but just what children do - they have to learn somehow 😂

Wonderful capture and a great story to go with it. Fascinating about the flame happening so quickly but fortunately you were about to snuff it quickly.
May 16th, 2018
Great story Babs and at least you were quick to put it out. I'd forgotten we used to use glass to light fires as children.
May 16th, 2018
Handy if you want to barbecue something though - in my case, my hand whilst I was adjusting the ball. Ouch.
May 16th, 2018
Oh my! The scene you described needs to go in the photographer’s contortions video I say needs to be made. Priceless!
May 16th, 2018
A super capture and great narrative. Fav!! 😀
May 16th, 2018
Love this! Fav
May 16th, 2018
On the one and only time I've took my crystal ball out I nearly did the same. Be careful out there Babs!
May 16th, 2018
Oh gosh Babs, just as well there was lots of sand available to put out the fire. I only knew about that issue after my father found a number of small burns on his desk that turned out to be sun damage from several glass paper-weights. Love the shot though, very clever to capture the action too.
May 17th, 2018
That is funny, who knew it would happen so quickly! Glad you noticed it though! Thanks for this good shot.
May 17th, 2018
I have almost started a fire with mine too! Great shot.

I wasn't smiling when I saw it though. Good job it is almost winter and not very warm. If I had been in bushland in the middle of summer the flames would have gone up like wildfire.

@dide Luckily at home it isn't in direct sunlight.

@cruiser Yes, I thought the same as you Chris it would have gone up like wildfire in the bush.
May 17th, 2018
hahahahahaha - it is definitely a crystal ball hazard
May 17th, 2018
That's a wow! Story!!
May 17th, 2018
lovely capture and what a story :-o
May 17th, 2018
I must remember that. My husband is buying me one for my birthday.
May 17th, 2018
Oh, my goodness! That's quite a story to go with this fantastic crystal ball photo, Babs! :-)
May 17th, 2018
Great shot.
May 17th, 2018
What an adventure! It's a super shot though Babs.
May 17th, 2018
My goodness - I didn't realise they could be such a fire hazard! You were lucky there but it still is a very nice shot:)
May 18th, 2018
The first time I used the glass ball, I burnt my hand. They can ignite dry grass so quickly. So glad your fire was easily extinguished.
May 19th, 2018
Now that's a story, so glad I didn't see you on the news for setting a fire.
May 20th, 2018
Oh my gosh!! I remember trying so hard to do that with a magnifying glass as a kid...it never worked......and here you did it intentionally... Good job you spotted the fire and were able to put it out Babs...!
May 29th, 2018
What a tale!!!
