I have not heard of Moreton Bay Figs. I remember Moreton Bay Bugs! I nearly fainted when hubby ordered some in Sydney for dinner! Not my kind of food at all - allergic to shellfish - but the name has stuck with me forever. What fabulous roots. Reminds of the Triffids.
There are a whole row of these trees around a park in Newcastle and at night as the cars go by with their headlights on look really creepy, like Dementors from Harry Potter movies.
This tree is indeed very old, probably over 100 years.
@onewing I know what you mean by how creepy they look with the lights on them. There is a row of them at Sawtell up the main street and at night the lanterns hanging around them give them a very eerie glow; quite spooky.
