@flowerfairyann Coffs Harbour is one of the banana growing areas in Australia and Australia has a thing about creating 'Big Things' so I suppose Coffs thought that a banana would be a good idea in their area.
@louannwarren Yes, they grow bananas in Coffs Harbour. Queensland is the main area for banana growing but I think Coffs is the most southerly point for growing them.
@inthecloud5 I will copy what I wrote to Ann and you can check out our Big Things here too.

@peterday I guess the Top Banana saying in the UK suggest the most important person. That isn't the meaning here. Bananas are grown in Coffs and as we like to put up sculptures of big things here, a banana seemed like a good idea I suppose.
Somebody who is either important or too big for their boots in Australia is a Tall Poppy
Fun place and I had to dug deep, but have proof that we have been there as tourists posing in front like the husband! It was December 2006 and there was a sign "celebrating 40 years" then under the banana.
I thought it must have been a friend of yours. Did you offer to take a pic for the two of them with her camera? A friend of mine always does whereas I tend not to.
Nice pic of the banana, I've never been there.
@onewing Some people will ask if they want one but we asked someone when we were on top of Mt Wellington in Tassie to take a pic of the four of us and got a very strange look as if to say "why would I want a pic of you four!" Haha, we had to explain with our camera! She did take it of course. These days I tend to just set the self timer and get in the shot :)
Here is a list of various big things around our country.

@ludwigsdiana @gigiflower @susiemc @sangwann @casablanca @bruni @paul10 @angelar @merrelyn @pcoulson @salza @henrir @seattlite @carolmw @jacqbb @yorkshirekiwi @bkbinthecity Thanks. We do like our big things in Australia and I have passed the Big Banana many times on our trips up the coast but this is the first time I have photographed it.

@beryl I thought they added an extra interest to the photo.
