The Muster Point by onewing

The Muster Point

As a continuation of my ‘rust’ theme I am now going to post photos of the Muster Point sculpture in Newcastle, until the end of the month.

Normally the sculpture is chained and you can only get inside by appointment only. A group of us from our photo club visited the Muster Point as one of our outings.

Artist Julie Squires was commissioned to build the Muster Point sculpture for the closure of Newcastle's BHP Steelworks in 1999. The sculpture reflects on the experiences of the tens of thousands of people who worked at the plant over the 84 years of operation.

The Muster Point is a 70 tonne steel sculpture with bronze cast figures plus objects, found objects and components from the Steelworks.

The steel and bronze monument, standing 8 metres high, 16 metres in length and 12 metres wide, was installed along Industrial Drive, opening two weeks before the plant closure in September 1999.

The Muster Point was designed as a visual analogy to reflect the real life experiences of the employees of the Newcastle Steelworks, prior to the closure of the plant.

The light isn’t the best on this photo, but it was the only angle I could get of the whole structure on the day.

Muster.... reminds me of that dreadful exercise you have to go through on cruise ships before you set sail! Fascinating sculpture, but I do find it a bit ugly!

Great capture but Babs, this structure does not rock my boat -- rather ugly to my eye !! It must be enormous as you have craftily shown us by including a photographer byy the side of it !

What an interesting structure! I wonder if they got a vote from the people that worked there to agree to it! Love the capture of your photographer friend :) Shows us how big it is!

Such an interesting sculpture and story. The color and shapes are very cool..and that door is amazing. Will we be able to see the inside? Nice capture of it Babs. The person taking a photo helps put it into perspective.

@dianeburns @jackie8 @ourrube @beryl @gigiflower @hermann @angelar @darthkitty @888rachel @creampuff @eyesmile @pcoulson @kwiksilver @elaine55 @golftragic Thank you all so much. Group reply again I am afraid becasue I have been checking out your photos today. The lady in the picture is one of our photo club group. About 18 of us went on the tour and also we were shown round the previous BHP site too. Unfortunately, the Muster Point sculpture is only open by appointment because it is located in a not too good area of Newcastle and vandals have previously damaged it.
