This Halloween thing is new to me. I never grew up with it and it's not really my thing. But it being half term and all children at home, a pumpkin is a nice addition.
Nice! What else can you do with a pumpkin? Halloween not part of the culture I grew up in either (although I do remember we used to spell it Hallowe'en) A date in the Christian calendar.... All Hallows Evening, the night before All Hallows (or All Souls) Day. Probably based on a pagan festival, as with many Christian celebration days. Now just another way to make money out of junk, as befits our modern capitalist lifestyle in which Shopping Malls have displaced Cathedrals! (
Onze moeder vierde(?) altijd Aller heiligen en Allerzielen. Ik denk dat het daar uit voortgekomen is. Kinderen vinden ieder feest leuk.

@yrhenwr you can make a pumpkin pie with the flesh, we also kept the seeds, dried them and we'll sow them in May, June. We held a can you lift the pumpkin contest too :-)
I was going to tell you how good the interiour is to eat! We have a delicious Ginger-Pumpkin Soup recipe, and those seeds, dried and browned in butter with seasonings are a fabulous snack! I'll actually buy extra pumpkins while they're inexpensive this time of year and dry and save the seeds for making Toasted Pumpkin seeds.
@Weezilou oh the ginger pumpkin soup sounds yummy! I like pumpkin soup with smelly cheese in it. And good idea to toast some because even though we only had one pumpkin, we had tons of seeds.
@yrhenwr DETEST with a passion halloween and hide away. The kids don't do it.... It's all commercial and frankly horrible. Anyway... Pumpkins on the other hand make gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous soup and muffins!!
@newbank@overalvandaan No chance saving the seeds... too tempting to toast and eat them! These days I would fail a 'lift the pumpkin' contest! Pumpkin soup good, especially with ginger, I agree.. pumpkin pies are too sweet.. I like the sound of the muffins but dare not try them as they might undermine 2 successful years controlling Type 2 diabetes. T2D is a punishment for choosing my parents badly! :-)
Halloween was never celebrated when I was a child -- in fact I can not remember anything about Halloween until I was teaching !! (and still not a fan of the celebrations enticing the sale of all sort of plastic rubbish !! --- sorry if I sound like a grumpy old woman !! lol)However I do like to see the pumpkins around . A great shot -- are you going to carve it ? --Makes a nice pumpkin Soup !!
@beryl@yrhenwr@newbank agree on the plastic rubbish and commercial side! Doing something together though with the children, like carving the pumpkin, taking the seeds and flesh out I really enjoyed and to see their faces when the tea light went in and I lit it, was great to see.
@pyrrhula@overalvandaan Ken cut up one of our large, field pumpkins last year, and it made a nice soup. To be fully balanced , I must say that a butternut squash makes a better flavored soup, but I wouldn't complain at all about what we had. @yrhenwr Like David, my pumpkin seeds will never see a garden! ANd to all I'd say I never make a pumpkin pie. In Nova Scotia and in California they're very available to purchase and inexpensive, so I buy mine as everyone's take pretty much the same!
