works so well in black and white - although I'd call that blackthorn - the one that gives sloes (it's also earlier than hawthorn, which is usually a month later)
@30pics4jackiesdiamond hawthorn is also called may and there are several varieties - a pink one that grows into a tree, and two white versions, which hybridise, with one or two seeds and single or double flowers. Hawthorn flowers in late April, early May after the leaves. I've heard "cast not a clout until May is out" also refer to the month about not taking clothes off until late May. (There's also the advice about not planting seeds until the farmer can sit bare bottomed on the field). Blackthorn usually flowers in March on bare branches and there's often a cold snap when it flowers - the blackthorn winter.
Yes blackthorn.... and you have made it look good! Hawthorn (or Mayflower) usually opens at the end of the month of May, but it is becoming earlier. The old saying is "N'er cast a clout 'til May is out" means don't go without a coat before the mayflower opens.
When I saw you were doing a year of b&w I wondered how you could manage without colour for that long. Now it's starting to make sense - it's all about the light and and contrast composition and clarity. :)
@robz there is so much to explore in black and white, and I'm only in the third month of the year, so many more to go. Luckily I've got another album where I can post colour :-)
