Surprise hydrangea by pamknowler

Surprise hydrangea

I had potted up a cutting from my big white hydrangea and imagine my surprise when a white flower and a red flower emerged! I called my sister out to see this unusual plant and discovered that she had put another cutting in the flower pot from another plant!! So funny as my sister is always doing something quite different to me. Still getting used to living together!!

Best on black

Many thanks for your lovely comments on my bear image - very much appreciated!!
What a lovely pairing! And what fun to see the beautiful differences two sisters would create in the same flower pot! This made me smile!

Oh what fun! Snow White and Rose Red, eh? Loved that old story of the two sisters. Beautiful flowers.

Nice to know you are living with your sister! I had intended this to happen if I was left alone but then my younger sister passed away! I have hydrangeas and know that they will 'take' if you do it right!

Haha! You made me laugh about you and your sister! I don't think I could live with either of mine but I love them dearly!

Lovely and delightful story

I like thinking that magically and red and a white flower grew out of your cutting! But probably best to have solved the mystery! I've never potted such a complex plant...I'm just trying to get roots to grow on the cuts from my coleus plants!

What a great story. I can't wait for my hydrangea to flower. We were given a couple of cuttings from a friend at the end of summer.

@taffy Taffy these are really easy to take cuttings and plant on. You cut the branch below a leaf node and pull those leaves off leaving others above. Take two or three and put the cuttings in a pot of water and wait until the roots appear. Then plant into a pot with compost. I sound like I know what I am doing but Barb has just told me how to do it!! LOL!! She says its easy!! Good luck!!

@pamknowler Can you do it with all hydrangeas? Ours are a particular type...can't remember the name of them. Leafy with big white heavy flowers.

@taffy Barb took cuttings from all our hydrangeas both Lace cap and Mop head and they all took. The only problem we have had was caused by me cutting back hard on all our hydrangeas this Spring as they were all really large. Now we have four big bushes just leaves with no flowers. All the rest have flowered beautifully. It seems some only flower on the hard wood and others flower on new growth. Just be aware of this if you do trim yours and look up which kind you have and how you should trim them. I can’t remember which ones are which. I love hydrangeas and even with my mistake this year we do have a lovely showing in the garden. Good luck!
