Last shot to bring my main album up to date. Hopefully I will be able to take some shots tomorrow!!
This giant sculpture is sitting on a huge bench on Scarborough seafront. I thought it looked funny with Barbara and Finlay in the shot.
A friend has Googled this sculpture and tells me it is called "Freddie Gilroy and the Belson stragglers" A giant steel structure made by Ray Lonsdale an artist from County Durham. The sculpture is based on a retired miner who turned out to be one of the first soldiers to relieve the Bergen-Belson Concentration camp at the end of World War 11.
What a huge and beautiful sculpture. Finlay is about the size of one of its feet! The story behind it is very interesting. Liberating the camps and realizing what had gone on in them must have been a harrowing experience. I have read that soldiers who took part in these liberations found them a huge reinforcement to their feelings that the war had been worth fighting.
