ID confirmed by Mark Prince - many thanks!! I haven't seen one before so checked it out in my bird book and still managed to get the wrong ID!! LOL!
It was lovely to watch him walking along the edge of the lake picking up little bits from the water. A very pretty bird with a lovely flash of yellow underneath.
Nice find Pam, but it's not a Yellow Wagtail. It is a Grey Wagtail, they are in the same family as the more familiar black and white Pied Wagtail. This Grey Wagtail, as it's name suggests has a greyish back, and like it's Pied cousin remain here all year round. In fact for the last few years I have been lucky enough to have had a Grey Wagtail visit my garden through the winter months.
A Yellow Wagtail looks similar but the grey on the back and the head is replaced by a lovely yellow colour, it is a very striking bird. It is also a summer visitor to country and flies off to Africa for the winter.
I hope this helps.
@markp Oh many thanks for the information and correct ID Mark!! I could not make up my mind between the two but the picture in my book has the Grey Wagtail with a black neck under the chin. Obviously if the Yellow wagtail goes to Africa that makes it clear I have the wrong ID!! Not the first time I have done that!! LOL!! I will amend the title and comment.
