I talk a lot about my granddaughter because she lives with me and hasn’t seen her Mom in over a year and a half, but I don’t mention my grandson as much even though he only lives four miles away. They are more independent and often spend time off work up in the mountains, but yesterday was a gift. I got to substitute teach his class. He is three and in a communication delayed class, pretty severely autistic, he doesn’t speak, and rarely makes eye contact, but when he saw me at school, he locked his eyes on mine, laughed, and took me to the swings and as I pushed him he kept looking in my eyes, grabbing my hand and laughing in delight. Five months past his third birthday and it was the first time I knew he recognized me.
