Heavy rain all day have had to resort to posting an image from the weekend,
this craftsman is turning wood in the old way used for hundreds of years before power available, two springy tree branches linked together with a rope, then a link from this rope down around the wood to be turned, down to a hinged plank on the ground used as a treadle to spin the wood to be carved.
Great fill-in! I like the effect of the line in the foreground. And very interesting technique. I guess I always thought lathes were available all through history. Duh.
Very interesting shot Peter.I did wood turning for a few years before moving to Charters Towers.I sold my lathe & band saw here after we arrived due to lack of room.Kicked myself ever since.Had not seen the above method though !!!
@stray_shooter Thanks for your lovely comments Ron, brief history of Pole Lathes :- The pole lathe's origin is lost in antiquity; its know that Vikings used them from the archaeological finds at Jórvík, the Viking settlement discovered beneath the modern city of York in England the viking came to York in 678 AD, every day is a school day, lol:)
@peterlgrave Thanks Peter we made small bowls on wood Lathes at school using powered lathes, I loved doing it so satisfying to produce something in wood and we still have one of the bowls:)
@dide Thanks Dianne its so nice to see the traditional craftsman's skills are still about there are some groups/clubs making all sorts of things the traditional way in the UK and they can be seen at county shows working away:)
@simta Спасибо за ваши комментарии, Татьяна, я считаю, что это ремесленник работает традиционным способом и ставит на демонстрации на выставках и окружных ярмарок
