Overflow

This is the Booth Wood Reservoir Damp full to overflowing, took this shot in the pouring rain which turned to snow whilst I was there,
The reservoir was approved for construction in 1966 and completed in 1971. It supplies water to Wakefield.
The reservoir dams the Booth Dean Clough watercourse and takes water directly from the surrounding moorland. It extends to a length of 1,150 feet (350 m) and a height of 157 feet (48 m).

I would not have worked out what this was if you had not given the narrative. I like the symmetry of the shot. It certainly looks full. Well done for standing out there in the rain

I have to admit to still being rather puzzled, Peter, despite your explanation. Dedication to 365!

Excellent.. love the staggered bits of the water - like runs in paint!! - beautiful.. your PoV is staggeringly 'in your face' - positively exquisite.. i'm loving everything about this image, i'm craning my neck upwards as i look at it..
i can tell how full the reservoir is by how much water is coming over the lip.. the barriers to the side overspills are higher than the main one. Usually it is only the central one which overflows.. This is telling as to how much rainfall we've had lately. Well done you for standing out in the sleety weather..

Looks like a beautiful lace skirt. Quite dramatic.

@suesouthwood Thank you for your lovely comments Sue, the perspective is a little strange as I was looking straight up the dam face with no chance to move as there was a hedgerow at my back, the water was moving down the face very fast hence the white water patterns, camera set to 1/160th of a second:)

@quietpurplehaze your comment has got me a little puzzled to Haze, if its the image, its water running at high speed over the edge of a dam, if its why on earth I would got out in the rain to take the shot, that's because to get the water running over the dam I would have to go out when the reservoir was full after a period of heaving rain, and yes I did want to get that shot and went out deliberately to get it, all I needed was a Gortex jacket and my thick skin, lol:)

@jorlam Thank you for your wonderful comments and fav Jorlam they are very much appreciated, your comments cover aspects I was looking for as I approached taking the shot on arrival at the face of the dam, height, scale, force of the water, patterns and movement, it was difficult to get a better perspective would have like more at the base of the dam but was limited by space, I was quite pleased with the result:)

@ubobohobo Thank you for your comments Margaret I had not thought of that as I was taking the shot, can see what you mean now:)

Hey, we've got one like that too - not quite as well engineered though it seems. They had to evacuate the people downstream for fear that it might totally fail. I love the perspective you utilized here and the texture in the water/snow is fascinating.

@stray_shooter Thank you for your great comments Ron, it is not at risk in any way, quite normal in fact unlike the Oroville Dam and the damage caused to the emergency spillway or the effect it has had on the local community, it was all over the news over here very very scary:)

@pcoulson

@quietpurplehaze Thanks Hazel for the link, the flickr shot is the Booth wood dam the one I photographed, its about 2 miles in a straight line from the Scammonden Reservoirabout 10 miles by road, its of totally different construction its a man made lake using the M62 motorway as an earth dam and the water pick up is via a tower and tunnel in the lake, it has no dam as such for the water to cascade over:)

@pcoulson
