This is Three Locks, on the Grand Union Canal which runs from London to the industrial Midlands. These are "broad" locks - that is, 14ft wide, and so can take two 7ft narrowboats side by side. In later canals, locks were often "singled" - reduced to 7ft wide - to save on building costs and water. In the process, they became less efficient, so hastening the end of commercial traffic on canals in favour of the railway.
@stimuloog This is quite busy as there is a pub by the locks, so there are lots of non-boaters there for lunch, and it would be a good place for boaters to stop, too. Mind you, "busy" is a relative thing. Most of the canal network is reasonably quiet, even at peak times. I wonder what stopped you trying it, in the end. We've done it many times (too many times, says my wife) and our kids have very happy memories of those trips.
