Today I had to travel across London, and the underground can't be beaten (when it's running well, which must be 99% of the time). The only downfall (in the summer) is the heat and lack of fresh air!
The first underground trains commenced in London in the late 19th century, and were initially served by steam locomotives (can you imagine that, in a tunnel?!?). The last steam loco ran in routine active service in 1961, and the network of 11 lines is now served by these "electric multiple units" of various kinds and vintage.
This is a phone shot, and I have just knocked back the colour vibrancy and overall clarity to make the image a little "softer".
Thanks for all the comments and Favs over the past few days!
@fbailey Felicity, maybe I should approach TfL for publicity ;-) @oldmanofkent John, oh dear, a shame. Imagine what it was like in stream days! In fact, TfL ran a live steam service through some of the original Metropolitan line back in 2013 as a commemoration of 150 years service to London.
