River Medway Series - 4

Continuing my little series following the history of the River Medway, this is East Farleigh.

The bridge dates to the 14th century, and is one of the earliest stone bridges in southern England and a Scheduled Historic Monument. The bridge carried Cromwell's troops across the river in 1648 to win in battle with the Royalists in Maidstone (a few miles away) - a key stage for the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War.

In the foreground is the top gate of East Farleigh lock, built in the late 1790s (I think) and refurbished most recently in 2017. See http://365project.org/peadar/extras/2019-05-07

In the background you can see the spire of St Mary's Church, which dates back to the 12th century.

Many thanks for all of your comments over recent days - all very much appreciated.

Fabulous capture. Is one person able to close the lock wing's?

Nice clean shot, no human distraction. Like the combined elements of stone, wood, water and greenery.

@haskar Yes, in theory, although I'm not sure if these are electrically operated as some are.

A really interesting scene. No structure as old as this in Australia, or as sturdy.

They don’t make bridges the way they use to. :)
