drop shot

This shot is inspired by many others on 365; not the best shot in the world, I know, but I have spent an hour and a quarter dropping things into a jar of water and that's enough!
Phahahahahahahaaa! I know that feeling all too well! I told you that nothing, I repeat nothing, with water is ever straightforward!! Well done for persevering, I like the bold splash of colour and all the tumult around the tomatoes! Are you going to soothe yourself with a market shot tomorrow!

Time flies when you're playing with water... What a challenge. I'm not even trying before there's more natural light in this world again... :D I saw some photography students do these high speed shots at a photo fair last year - it looked so easy! :D Hahah, I suppose us mere mortals are going to have to settle with trying for hours... :D Great job, Peter.

Those photo shoots so full of great ideas only to be beaten by real life. Had a few of those recently! Any tips for if you were to try again?

The things we do for 365! Great first attempt. I have yet to try such a shot myself.

Nice shot

Nice!

@jackie8 Yes, Jackie, back into my comfort zone! Thank you!

@joa Johanna, you are too kind. This is an awful shot!

@twocups James, I think the thing I didn't pay enough attention to was focus. You have to use manual focus on these shots and I didn't quite find a good way of getting a focus on the right spot.

@peadar Heh, Peter - sometimes the greatness of the shot isn't so much in the quality of the final product but in the process! :)
January 4th, 2013
Well done, Peter - I could not, nor would I, ever devote 90 minutes to a shot - my hats off to you!
January 4th, 2013
Great job! I haven't tried this kind of shot yet. And i'm jealous of everyone who has done it :)
January 4th, 2013
Well done for being so committed! I might try something like this myself soon now that I've seen yours.
January 4th, 2013
Great job! Sometimes we spend more time than we plan but it was worth it here!

Peter, I'm beginning to worry about us. . .I have been working in water again too. My hands get all crinkled up just trying to fish out whatever damn thing I've thrown in the water this time. . .

Lyn
Maybe it's because we're approaching the finish line. . . :-}
January 4th, 2013
great shot!
January 4th, 2013
I agree with @joa but I do think the end result actually is pretty good @peadar

Oh how wonderful, not that i was down but this has really made me laugh!!! Utterly priceless and what state is the kitchen floor? I love 365 what has become of us all? Wonderful splashy shot Peter!! ( the trick to get the focus is to place 4 pieces of tape opposite each other to mark the spot where the tomato enters the water, focus your camera in advance (I watched the video, HH of course!!)

A photographer has to be patient...

I like how it shows the movement of the water. I think you can spend days on drop into water shots.

Looks good to me!

Peter I have done this recently at a workshop with my camera club, we had red peppers in a fish tank, mine didn't turn out well but I only spent about 5 mins on that one. We had a square vase with a liquorice allsort and the guy who demonstrated placed the sweet in the water first for us to focus etc., and I spent a lot of time there and that one turned out slightly better but my favourite was pouring coloured pouring into a wine glass with a bucket underneath to catch the water. That was really fun!

Super capture of droppage! ) Love the bubble and perfect tomatoes :)
January 4th, 2013
It is harder than it looks. I like the sense of movement.
January 4th, 2013
@joa Thank you, Johanna, that's benediction! :-)
January 4th, 2013
@lyno Yes, Lyn, I am trying to get everything into the last month - impossible, I know!
January 4th, 2013
Funny how these things seem so easy when you plan it, until you try it.
Water seems to be in my future.
January 5th, 2013
You have to know when enough is enough! I still haven't tried this. Looks too hard. :)
January 5th, 2013
Cool shot!
January 5th, 2013
I feel your pain! I have several hundred images that *should* look just like this, but are either slightly too early or slightly too late. Why!? Congratulations for having the staying power!
January 5th, 2013
Not only is this a captivating image, I've learned two other things from your comments: perseverance in practice, and that it's ok to "get ideas" and replicate what others have done. Thanks.
January 6th, 2013
@jyokota Thank you, Junko. Yes, I think part of the beauty of this site is that you get inspired by so many great photographers and then you can try it yourself, which usually involves a massive learning curve. I have learnt so much. But, there is always more to learn! Thanks for the comment.
January 6th, 2013
You have certainly captured movement Peter. Better than any 'things dropping into water' shot that i have ever managed!
