Lone rider

This is Joyden's Wood, an area of ancient woodland on the edge of north-west Kent bordering south-east London.

There are traces of settlements in the forest that are over 2,000 years old, and deneholes have been found. These are deep shafts dug into the ground, with cave-like chambers leading off at various levels. I believe the origin and purpose of deneholes is much discussed and disputed, but the most likely explanation is that they were excavations for chalk (which was used for agricultural purposes).

It's a popular area for walking and riding - and I thought this shot deserved an outing.

Many thanks for all you recent views, comments and favs - all very much appreciated.
What an intetesting story for this nice shot.

@ingrid01 Ingrid, I believe it's from Anglo-Saxon - "den" being a hole or depression in the ground.
