This is the River Medway. (If you're not familiar with this area, it drops through the middle of Kent from the River Thames Estuary to the east of London.)
There are signs of human settlement and activity along the river at various points dating back to the Stone Age c 10,000 BC. The Romans fought a battle near here in AD43, and then went on to build the first bridge across the river a mile or so north of here.
There are actually 3 separate bridges forming The Medway Crossing you can see in the background. The closest was built in 1963 to carry the main A2 London to Kent Coast motorway. In 2003, the two other bridges were built, one for another motorway carriageway (giving four lanes each way) and the third, most southerly, taking the HS1 High Speed train line from Paris into London. Originally the only trains on these HS1 lines were international, operated by Eurostar, but subsequently the national Southeastern franchise started high speed services between the Kent Coast and London which cut travel times by half and led to a significant expansion in development throughout the Kent corridor close to the line.
As you can see, we remain blessed with good weather in the UK!
Its been along while since I've been on the Medway late 60s was about the last time. We ran cargo up to Rochester, Gillingham from the continent in a small coaster.
