Alert, alert...

Extras: More from our Botswana trip.

This family of giraffe have just gone on high alert as they notice a pride of lions moving in their direction (from behind the camera). The following 45 minutes were very tense; it was like watching a high stakes game of chess. The young male lions (who have a limited store of "strike" energy) tried to establish tactical positions of strength in relation to the young giraffe so that when they did strike, they were almost guaranteed a kill. On this occasion the adult giraffes outwitted them - always keeping themselves between the lion and their offspring, and gradually moving away such that any strike attempt by the lion would almost certainly fail. It was fascinating - and nail-biting -
stuff.
Sounds like a fascinating holiday to see things like this. Wonderful. I get stressed out for the animals when I watch documentaries and you can see the predators approaching, let alone to see it for real!

Fabulous shot. Love giraffes. A bonus of 365 is seeing stuff through others' eyes, mostly things I will not see in the wild/reality.

What a wonderful holiday, and a happy ending, although I'm sure the lions wouldn't agree

You can sense the atmosphere and I'm pleased to hear the giraffes outwitted the lions - they are such majestic creatures.
