The "Dilworth" Owl by peggysirk

The "Dilworth" Owl

Tom and I were taking a brief walk late yesterday afternoon and happened on the neighborhood resident Barred Owl (Hoot Owl) sitting in a tree in a neighbor's front yard. I had my new camera with the even newer lens attached...neither of which I'm very good with yet. It took me about ten minutes to get a halfway focused shot. I'm very glad the subject was so cooperative and stayed put. He seemed to enjoy watching me struggle with the camera. :) I had about 50 shots of him in full view without the big branch blocking him ~ all a total blur. My #1 New Year's resolution is to learn how to use my camera. :)
Its a great photo! :)

I love the way he's peering at you over the top of that branch. And those breast feathers are beautiful, aren't they? I look forward to another shot of him one day in all his glory. And you've been taking some lovely shots with that camera, Peggy. Keep at it and you'll have it beaten in no time.

Oh Peggy, I love this shot. I have been trying to get a picture of an owl when we are camping. I can hear them, but never find them.

Lucky you to have this fellow as a neighbor. And so cooperative. I love the detail in the feathers and the way he's looking right at you.

Excellent focus Peggy - wonderful details! I love him peeping over the branch right at you - kind of intimidating really....

Pity about the branch but I still think its a great shot especially the light on him against the blue sky!

Great shot.

great capture of the wise old owl

Oh Peggy, he's beautiful, and you did a fabulous job of capturing him. Don't feel bad about having fifty blurred pictures. I have had my camera since summer, and there are some days that I still take over one hundred pictures of my subject! I still can't find my darn manual, so I need to put my camera down and watch those instructional DVDs. It's just more fun to play.

Gorgeous bird and GREAT shot Peggy! It seems there's always a branch in the way! I love the Owls and it's such a treat to see them, especially if you happen to have your camera with you (which I never do!:)

Like how he's peering over the branch at you. He's a beauty. Even with your new lens, you must have been fairly close. Very crisp shot!

@fluffy Thanks, Fiona! My husband was the one who saw him...I would have walked right by and never known what I'd missed. :)

@girlie I loved the colors of his breast feathers, too. He was really quite handsome and had a wonderful face behind that branch. Thanks for the camera encouragement, Robin!

@madeline515 I love the sound of an owl call...I've heard this guy off and on for several years and have only seen him twice before. Both times were early in the morning when I didn't have a camera with me.

@barbsmith Thanks, Barb. He went out of his way to work with me!

@annwebbie Thanks, Laura...it was the first and only semi-sunny day we've had in a while. The Carolina blue sky was back for a brief visit. :)

@cccoupland Thanks, Chris! I was a bit bummed when none of the branchless shots turned out.

@rosewall Thanks, Jim. That's quite a compliment coming from you with all of your fantastic wildlife shots!

@glyn Thanks, Glynnis! I'm an owl fan, too!

@petersonsheri Thanks, Sheri! You're right...it's much more fun to just start shooting rather than study a manual! But, I really am going to buckle down and do some camera homework after the holidays. :)

@bluemoon Thanks, Paula! I love owls, too. I've seen this guy a couple of times before but, no camera with me. I would've walked right past him this time if not for my eagle eyed husband spotter. :)

@katrinacristy Thanks, Katrina! He did seem quite content to sit there and patiently pose as I fumbled around with my camera. :)

@molizard Thanks for the nice feedback! He was relatively close, in some of the lower branches of the tree.

What a beautiful being. This owl is gorgeous. How lucky for you to get such a cooperative owl.

This is great !! I can almost see the expression on his face Peggy .."Oh for goodness sake woman, get it right .. " LOL Fantastic shot. I am having exactly the same problem with my Nikon. I WILL get the hang of it .. been sitting down every day with the manual and giving myself "lessons" but the weather has been too rough to go out and really get to grips with it/ Good luck!
