I'm still recovering from being out in the freezing cold last night to take this shot of the moon. :)
I'm neither an astronomer or a mathematician, so I had to wonder why an obviously half moon was called a quarter moon. I googled it and found out that we officially call this moon a quarter and not a half because it is one quarter of the way around in its orbit of Earth, as measured from one new moon to the next. Now I know. :)
**Edit** Just researched movies and found the following. So, guess I can tag this one for the theme. :)
The Dark Side of the Moon (1990)
85 min - Action | Horror | Sci-Fi
It is the year 2022. A mysterious systems failure causes the crew of a spaceship to be stranded on the dark side of the moon...
Ohhh excellent detailed shot.. I really hope I be able to capture this one day myself -- far to many clouds over England at moment! I'll just keep looking at yours til then. I love that u researched it aswell - that's what I love about photography, new places & always learning. ;-)
@isisweiss Thanks, Isis...I'm not sick ~ I was just frozen. :) Did you ever try a Neti pot? I swear they help. I think it's the reason I rarely have a cold or sinus issues.
Thanks, Catherine! These were the settings ~
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/4.4
ISO Speed: 80
Focal Length: 86.4 mm
Wish that meant more to me...I still shoot primarily by feel. :) But, I'm
trying to figure out the technical details.
Oh my goodness! This looks like something out of National Geographic! SUCH an amazing shot! I would never have thought to use an ISO of 80 at night so I was interested to read that!
Peggy, absolutely awesome shot! Cannot believe the detail you achieved. My husband is insisting that you had your camera on a telescope! I told him no.
@barbsmith Barb, I do have a camera attachment for our telescope. Not only do I not know how to use it, but I didn't even have the telescope out last night. And, what's even more interesting is that this was taken with my point and shoot camera because it has better zoom capability than either lens I have for the Nikon! :)
@kerrym Thanks, Kerry! The ISO of 80 is probably a little misleading as this shot was actually taken while there was a little daylight at 6:30ish last night. I added more background contrast in editing to set the moon off better.
Wow! That is the most amazing moon shot ever! I totally assumed you took this with your telescope camera attachment until I read your note above. Nice nice nice job!!!
Wow Peggy, this moon shot is amazing. I was so far behind on commenting that I almost missed it! I will have to try the tripod. My moon shots (or night shots for that matter) never seem to turn out. Beautiful!!
Awesome! I had planned on shooting this moon this week too bit we've had cloud cover. I only have a point and shoot so it's encouraging to see such a great shot! Can't wait for these clouds to disappear!
Just found your moon pic in browse popular and for a minute thought it was mine. Was freezing when I took my pic tonight too. I should have tried a few more shots but I was too cold - great pic - will have to try your settings and see if I get better shot.
I took a photo of the Moon tonight. Funny comparing the two photos, they make a whole. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, I have the moon light on the left. It's a humid night here, so no frost bite for me.

Thanks for the great comments, everyone! Your responses made it worth the frostbit fingers and frozen tush to get that shot. :)
Thanks for the very nice comments, everyone!
@Christine ~ thanks for the heads up about the pp! Cool!
Thanks for the wonderful comments, everyone!
With which lens did you take this picture?
