First Quarter Moon by peggysirk

First Quarter Moon

I'm still recovering from being out in the freezing cold last night to take this shot of the moon. :)

I'm neither an astronomer or a mathematician, so I had to wonder why an obviously half moon was called a quarter moon. I googled it and found out that we officially call this moon a quarter and not a half because it is one quarter of the way around in its orbit of Earth, as measured from one new moon to the next. Now I know. :)

**Edit** Just researched movies and found the following. So, guess I can tag this one for the theme. :)
The Dark Side of the Moon (1990)
85 min - Action | Horror | Sci-Fi
It is the year 2022. A mysterious systems failure causes the crew of a spaceship to be stranded on the dark side of the moon...
Beautiful moon shot, Peggy. I have yet to get a decent one myself. Well done and thanks for suffering the cold to bring this lovely picture to us!

Great job Peggy.. I can never get one with such detail
January 13th, 2011
@girlie Thanks, Robin...I had a nice fire going in the fireplace and a glass of wine waiting when I came inside ~ so it really wasn't that bad! :)
January 13th, 2011
@sarasdadandmom Thanks, Terry. I found that using a tripod makes all the difference for me.
January 13th, 2011
Wow, love the detail. Be careful going out in the cold.
January 13th, 2011
Wow, that is neat. As good as a telescope!
January 13th, 2011
Love this!
January 13th, 2011
One of the best I've seen!
January 13th, 2011
Really great moon shot Peggy....you captured so much detail! Thanks for the information....I learned something new! Hope you've warmed up!!
January 13th, 2011
Ohhh excellent detailed shot.. I really hope I be able to capture this one day myself -- far to many clouds over England at moment! I'll just keep looking at yours til then. I love that u researched it aswell - that's what I love about photography, new places & always learning. ;-)
January 13th, 2011
This is a beautiful shot...I can't see the crew...it's too dark...
January 13th, 2011
Beautiful shot Peggy! You can see the craters!!! Hope you feel better...I still have this darn head cold...almost two weeks now!
January 13th, 2011
@isisweiss Thanks, Isis...I'm not sick ~ I was just frozen. :) Did you ever try a Neti pot? I swear they help. I think it's the reason I rarely have a cold or sinus issues.
January 13th, 2011
Stunning moon shot, Peggy! I would love to know what your settings were for this photograph
January 13th, 2011
Thanks, Catherine! These were the settings ~
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/4.4
ISO Speed: 80
Focal Length: 86.4 mm
Wish that meant more to me...I still shoot primarily by feel. :) But, I'm
trying to figure out the technical details.
January 13th, 2011
Awesome shot peggy. I'm curious about your settings as well.
January 13th, 2011
lovely moon shot
January 13th, 2011
Oh my goodness! This looks like something out of National Geographic! SUCH an amazing shot! I would never have thought to use an ISO of 80 at night so I was interested to read that!
January 13th, 2011
Peggy, absolutely awesome shot! Cannot believe the detail you achieved. My husband is insisting that you had your camera on a telescope! I told him no.
January 13th, 2011
this shot is amazing!! i love it :) Ive never been able to get a picture of the moon
January 13th, 2011
What sharpness! Excellent capture.
January 13th, 2011
@barbsmith Barb, I do have a camera attachment for our telescope. Not only do I not know how to use it, but I didn't even have the telescope out last night. And, what's even more interesting is that this was taken with my point and shoot camera because it has better zoom capability than either lens I have for the Nikon! :)
January 13th, 2011
@kerrym Thanks, Kerry! The ISO of 80 is probably a little misleading as this shot was actually taken while there was a little daylight at 6:30ish last night. I added more background contrast in editing to set the moon off better.
January 13th, 2011
peggy, this is amazing. moon shots are one of my goals, so i'm always interested in how someone did it. beautiful!!!
January 13th, 2011

January 13th, 2011
@peggysirk That's pretty funny. Can't wait to tell my husband. If a point and shoot will do that why or why do we have all this expensive equipment?
January 13th, 2011
This is FABULOUS!!

Wow Peggy, this moon shot is amazing. I was so far behind on commenting that I almost missed it! I will have to try the tripod. My moon shots (or night shots for that matter) never seem to turn out. Beautiful!!

Just found your moon pic in browse popular and for a minute thought it was mine. Was freezing when I took my pic tonight too. I should have tried a few more shots but I was too cold - great pic - will have to try your settings and see if I get better shot.

January 15th, 2011
YAY Peggy, you're on the popular page! Well done! (:
January 15th, 2011
I took a photo of the Moon tonight. Funny comparing the two photos, they make a whole. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, I have the moon light on the left. It's a humid night here, so no frost bite for me.
January 15th, 2011
Peggy, this is fantastic. Really well captured. Bumping up the contrast/increasing the blacks really helps the bright side pop!
January 15th, 2011
wow
