The Nelson House by pej

The Nelson House

Another filler for today. Back in 2001 we visited the Revolutionary War battlefield in Yorktown, Virginia. This is one of the remaining homes, the Nelson House. You can see a canon ball stuck in the brick work near the top window on the right.

The battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. The English general Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington as a result and the British government negotiated an end to the conflict.
The cannonball brings something extra to this house, great story...

@madeinnl The owner of the house at the time, Thomas Nelson, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was in the siege line there at Yorktown. Legend has it that he offered 5 guineas to any gunner who could hit his house. I guess he had to pay at least two gunners. There was another strike on the house not seen in this photo. We saw his grave there in the Grace Church courtyard.
