PEAK DISTRICT STEAM by phil_howcroft

PEAK DISTRICT STEAM

Yesterday was boats today was trains.

It was meant to be a nice day today, so we went to Matlock in the Derbyshire Peak District. It was sunny when we set out but 50 minutes later when we arried in Matlock the weather had changed to wet and grey.

Rather than walk in the rain we decided to take a trip on a preserved stream railway that runs between MAtlock and the village of Rowsley.

It was a good opportunity to take some pictures for 365 and the one I've posted is just about the last of the 80 I took !!!

It shows two of the volunteers seeing the train off as it departs from Rowsley station.I like how the angle of the shot makes them look like they are engulfed in steam.

I thought of converting the image to sepia or black and white but the colours of the carriages and the signs make it a timeless photo anyway (a crop of the picture has removed some cars from the left hand side of the image).

To all the 'steam buffs' among you....enjoy :)

Phil
I like that shot. I like the smoke from the train!

Oooh, a steamy picture on 365!!

I like that, even with all the steam, you can still see just a hint of the tree and sky in the background.

Phil..I marked this as a favorite..I am fascinated by trains..we have lots of coal trains in our area. The steam and volunteers add a wonderful effect to this image..great!

Love the sense of coming up from the depths of Hell! And yet the 2 gentlemen are so laid back and matter-of-fact. It isn't B&W is it? And yet the colors are muted. I like it a lot.

@andycoleborn Andy, thanks for the posative comments. We have quite a few opportunities in the UK to photograph old steam trains. ~I think I got lucky on this one

@allie912 Allison , it's good that you like it. I've done very little post processing in the image.

I cropped it, adjusted the contract slightly and actually boosted the saturation a tad.

The carraiges are a similar colour to the maroon sign behind the smaller man, but the reflection of the steam seems to have calmed the colours down a little.

Thanks again Allison

That's pretty neat! I like all the steam hiding whatever is in the background.
March 10th, 2011
@jeancarl Thanks Jean, the steam is actually hiding the engine and the derbyshire hills, so it is hiding some interesting bit, however I like the steam as it adds a bit of atmosphere
