This is my first 365 venture into wildlife photography.
I suppose a heron is a good bird for my first attempt because they stand still for so long. In fact this one has not moved for the best part of 3 months. When he did move he only moved from one side of our pond to the other !!!!
OK it may be a bit 'naff', but yes we do have a plastic heron on the side of our pond to scare off real herons !!! Last summer we lost a few of our fish to a heron that was flying around our suburban garden , so my mother in law bought me this as a birthday present !!!! It actually seems to work too :)
Even on the thumb nail I thought - hang on that is plackie! Great that is works as a heron scarer and keeps your fish safe. Good focus - you can see the flaking paint on its head and beak, and nice natural bokeh with the sunlight and shadows on the wood!
Ha ha ha, you crack me up! Even though you 'cheated' on your first venture into 'wildlife' photography, I have to admit it's a great shot :) Fantastic composition against the wood, and I love the shadow in such sharp focus
I'm glad you managed to get this one to pose for you Phil. I had no idea that a fake bird could scare away real ones. I'd have thought it would work the other way around.
We actually saw a heron plunder a pond of ornamental koi at the botanical garden. I'm glad you found a way to hold these marauders in check. BTW, great shadow.
You got closer to your heron than I did to mine :-) Glad it works - a lot of people here gave up on fish ponds. I thought about putting fish in with netting over but then I realized that was dangerous for birds. So, no fish.
