Little House on the Prairie -M62 motorway eastbound
On Saturday we went to see my parents in Bolton. The journey takes us along the M62 motorway in West Yorkshire. The M62 crosses the Pennine Hils that separate Lancashire and Yorkshire.
This shot was taken by my wife as we travelled home to rainy Nottingham and shows the little house on the prairie (we are travelling east bound on the motorway). You will notice the beautiful English summer skyline .... sorry about the reflection of the dashboard in the sky !!!
When the BBC announce their travel news on national radio, they often refer to this location as the 'Little House on the Prairie'.
The house is actually a farm. The farm has 3 lanes of a motorway either side of it. The farm is named Stott Hall Farm and is an 18th-century farm. The farm is located between the two carriageways of the motorway and lives between junctions 22 and 23 of the M62 motorway. The farm is separated from the motorway by crash barriers and a very high fence
Wow Phil - this brings back memories - of travelling from Preston to Leeds doing the university run for my sister and then going up to see my parents from Cambridge. That farm always made an impression. So sad that the motorway runs either side - it always seemed so spiteful!! Does anybody still live there?
I've always thought it a great shame that the powers that be chopped this farm up like this ! could they not have made a swerve round ? There is a similar farm spoilt near Shap where there are still people living right up to the motorway!! Great shot of the Pennines with the rain clouds !!
I've driven past that farm so many times, when I lived in Manchester the first time, and used to drive over to Leeds to visit my folks. I go by train these days! lol Nice capture of those ominous clouds
great shot Phil, i love driving past this house - it's so unique and I often wonder what its like to live there with traffic noisily zooming all around you.
It is quite a place! Radio 4 interviewed the farmers wife that lived there when the motorway was built I am not sure if they are still there now, it was very interesting. People said they refused to move and the motorway had to be diverted, but she said it was all planned that way and there had never been any requirement of them to move. Great shot of a real landmark!
@sparkle thanks Juliette, Itoo like driving by it, it is so atmospheric and interesting. I think I prefer driving Westbound (towards Manc) as you get a better view from that carriageway :)
@sarahhorsfall Sarah, it wasn't long until those ominous clouds were producing ominous amounts of rain. Thanks for your regular comments and support :)
@judithg Judith, the farm is still occupied and working...glad I brought back memories for you. Photography is good for evoking memories and emotions....hope the memories it brought back for you were good ones:)
Can you imagine lovingly cultivating that farm and then having the highway spoil your world? Interesting that they haven't thrown in the towel, as we say in the U.S.
I loved reading everyones memories of this area! Fun photo to capture a landmark. I especially like the weather clouds that were captured. Well done. Did Ruby go on the trip?
