Some of you may know that I am a Camera Club Judge in the North & East Midlands Photographic Federation. This afternoon I met up with David from the Federation Judging Committee to go through the feedback I had received from the clubs I’d judged at (judges are assessed by the clubs they judge at). Camera Club Photography can be a bit complicated !
We met at Sneinton market, which some of you will know is undergoing some urban regeneration to become a vibrant area just outside the city centre. We went to a coffee house, Blend, it was a sunny winter afternoon and there was some low winter sun shining on a couple of outside tables. I suggested we could sit there, so David went to get the coffees and I bagged the table.
On the table next to me were two young ladies having a coffee and a chat. They were speaking in Portuguese. I caught the eye of one of the students and smiled.
“Hi, is that French you are speaking?” I don’t know why I said that as I knew it was Portuguese
“It’s Portuguese” one of the ladies said
“Ahh sorry I said, Are you students?”
They were indeed students, one had just graduated and one was in year two, both from Nottingham Trent University.
“Did you watch the World Cup last night” I asked “Portugal were brilliant”
(FYI , they had just beat Switzerland 6-1)
“Yes we did, it was exciting”
“No Ronaldo too” I said
“We were much better without Ronaldo”
“I think you were right, you have a very good chance of lifting the World Cup”
I then told them about my photography project of photographing strangers and asked them if it was OK to photograph them. Both agreed to have their photo took.
This is Diane (pronounced Dee Ana, it may actually be Daiane, but I will go with Diane)
She’s just graduated in Psychology after 3 years of studying and was now looking for a job.
“Obrigada” I said (thank you) and then knocked an empty cup of coffee onto the floor ! Classy Phil !
I didn't realise you were a camera club judge Phil! I will listen more closely to your critique now!! This is a fabulous photo, and I love the story too. By the way I have now edited my photo with the text - I forgot to include it when I pressed 'post'!.
@carole_sandford thanks Carole , all I do is pass comments and offer a gentle critique on peoples photos, it doesn't mean my comments are right or wrong, they are just comments :) . Glad you like the photo and commentary :)
I hadn’t realised you were a camera club judge either Phil.I always appreciate your comments, so they’re doubly appreciative now. Love seeing this stranger shot and the narrative. Not so I’m confident doing, but I’m trying.
Friendly looking lady. Your narrative made me smile, very entertaining!
