Alstromeria Reflection II by phil_sandford

Alstromeria Reflection II

The white Alstromeria have begun to blossom (the bunch I bought were tri-colour) so playing again with my macro studio in my weekly accommodation, I’ve been attempting to get the whites and the blacks as I see them with the mark one eyeball. Not always easy with a fullframe camera.

Quite pleased with the black on this shot; the flower is more cream than white, so pleased with that also.

Thank you for your views, comments and favs on yesterday’s offering. Much appreciated.
A lovely shot and reflections.

Your camera sensor and mark1eyeball view very differently, your camera will always err towards the middle ground of grey and has nothing to do with size of frame sensor.

Getting blacks dark and whites white is so hard. Angle your light source, set white balance to match your light source, and try a lower iso, smaller aperture and longer shutter speed. Then play and experiment with ev +/- to get the bold black / white you desire.

I like the soft focus on the flower, the shallow dof makes finding the details difficult. What is your light source and where was it positioned?

Hi Sis,

Thanks for your constructive critique of the photograph. I know how hard it is to get blacks and whites 'right' (have been trying for the 2 years or so I've been on 365) and this is probably the best I've achieved (there is no editing on this photograph) That said, the nature of a full frame sensor is that it captures far more light than cropped frame or bridge cameras and does make a difference (one of the reasons I bought the EOS)

I have the EOS on manual and constantly address the settings as you describe. My light source, (as this is a black ceramic place mat (with minute flecks of white) on the gas hob in my flat, with a black (actually very very dark grey piece of card) against the wall) varies from the light above the hob, the intense light from my 'light'box, (turned on its side, lid off), the light from one of my iPhones, or both of my iPhones, the overhead light and the wall lights, as I 'play'

Soft focus, on all of the alstromeria photographs is pafrtly intentional and partly down to the limitation of 1) the macro lens I'm using and 2) the diminishing performance of my mark one eyeballs (that and I am aware that the nature of the flower, the tunnel inside, with the macro lens it's very difficult to get all of the flower in focus unless I do not use the macro lens and adjust the apperture accordingly.

I continue to learn whilst doing the projects and will give your ev +/- advice a go next week when I'm down south west

Thanks again

Phil
