There is a lovely cafe called Nice inside the castle so had to stop for a cuppa. The castle was a high security prison until 2011, now declassified as a prison. It is still being used as an active court and some famous cases have been tried here. There is an area where they used to hang people. Just in front of the tower on the left hand side is a round tower called C block. The cells were around the circular tower and each one could be seen into by the guard in the centre at any moment. This was only vacated in 2011 and is very basic, cold and smelly.
