positioned myself leaning nonchalantly against a pillar outside the british museum with the ricoh gr set up to shoot a fantastic people shot with the perfect subject walking into the light at just the right moment. five minutes later i decided to go with the shadow - everyone was moving too fast and not pausing at just the right spot in just the right light :) #bestonblack
update september 2020 ...
decided that, after five-and-a-half years on this fabulous site, I should say a little more about myself than the two sentences...
Ok.... old photo, I know. But I was looking for the "Ricoh" tag - I am thinking of getting a Ricoh GR II or an upcoming III, and I am trying to find reviews/impressions from real people, not only online reviews. And look what I found when I searched for the Ricoh tag!!!!! :) Do you own one? Do you use it? If so, can you tell me more about it?
@vera365 i have the II. i really bought it for all the art presets and the wide angle. when my olympus broke last year it prompted me to use it more and i got the hang of it quite well. really sharp lens. but i haven't picked it up since i bought the fuji earlier this year and i move between fuji & oly. i do like the art presets but then i can do a lot of that myself these days with lightroom presets etc ... interested to hear why you're thinking of getting one?
Thanks for your answer!!! Interesting! I haven't heard about the presets on it really! I am thinking of getting one because of a couple of reasons. The main and biggest one is - I am just not grabbing my Fuji with me when I am going somewhere. Swamped with work and kids' activities, it's just not on my mind, so I have started not to think about taking photos throughout the day and then being sorry about it later. So, I just want something compact that I can put into my pocket quickly, operate with one hand and hopefully carry with me wherever I go (I don't like the iPhone as a camera, because I am always afraid of dropping it and have already dipped it into puddle once).
Ok, that means a compact for me. But I don't want a compact zoom camera because of the longer start-up times. If I really need a compact zoom, I could use my husband's (I don't really like it as you have to go into menus for a lot of controls and it's confusing).
I also don't want to get used to a "comfort" of compact zoom and start using it instead of my Fuji on non-busy days. Ricoh with its fixed lens seems attractive as a "challenge" - I rarely take wide-angle-ish photos unless I use my phone, and trying it out would be an interesting constraint. I gather that Ricoh still has a retractable lens, but from what I saw, it is fairly fast coming out and the camera is ready to shoot quickly. The would be great for travel photography: being always ready for some street/travel situations and not flashing the "big" camera on every occasion.
I am also thinking of Fuji XF10, but I tried it at the store, and found that it lacks a little bit of the logistical requirement for me - I want something that only needs one hand to get ready for shooting, and Fuji has a lens cap that protects the very exposed non-retractable fixed lens. That means, I would have to first take it off and then be ready to take photos. Plus, hoping that getting a Ricoh instead of Fuji will widen my stylistic options a bit - usually, colors and just the overall looks from various manufacturers do make a difference.
Oh! And the snap focus as a reason for my interest in GR! (apparently it can shoot quickly with a preset focus ignoring all other focus settings if the button is pressed all the way through - have you ever tried it?).
