oradour sur glane

a most powerful and moving visit on our drive back up france, to oradour sur glane, where on 10 June 1944 a german waffen-ss company massacred 642 of its inhabitants, including many women and children, and destroyed the village.
a new village was built nearby after the war, but president de gaulle ordered the original to be maintained as a permanent memorial and museum. so we spent some time in the visitor's centre, understanding the context and tragedy of this event, and then made our way across the road to the preserved remains of oradour, which you see above
Wow, so sad. Glad they kept it as a reminder. Nicely captured!!

The lone figure in the distance speaks to the emptiness. A very moving composition.

Old and new and melancholy

It’s so important that we don’t cover up our past, we need to remember. This is such a thoughtful image.

Very poignant place. I like this shadow on the road, it adds depth to the image.
